On a recent trip to the Hunter on a Monday and Tuesday we were in a quandary over where to eat on a Monday night. Fortunately The Cellar is one of the few places open for dinner on Monday nights. Luckily it is also a very pleasant and welcoming place to dine as well as having a menu that will please everyone.
I had the duck confit which came with shallot tarte tatin and chestnut purée and my partner had the lamb rump with Parmesan slaw and he chose a sauce of horseradish cream fraiche. We shared a salad of rocket, roast sweet potato, avocado and pine nut with raspberry and parmesan vinaigrette. The food was all lovely and unlike a lot of places, the servings were ample.
The wine list, as one can imagine in the Hunter, took up the whole back of the menu. There was a fine selection of wine by the glass and we ordered two different glasses each.
We were the first to arrive that night and we're given a seat near the fire. A very efficient and friendly waitress looked after our every whim all night for which she was justly rewarded with a bigger tip than I would normally leave.
Altogether a wonderful evening and if it is slim pickings again tonight, we would be more than happy to dine here again.
