Description: This ultra-popular restaurant (especially with locals who love a long lunch here) serves appetising Mediterranean meals in a relaxed, inviting space. It has a great outdoor courtyard, surrounded by wisteria, with tables shaded by large umbrellas and inside there’s a huge open fireplace in the centre of the room, surrounded by crisp, white-clothed tables and indoor gardens. Owner/chef Andy Wright offers a seasonal menu using the best Australian produce with regulars returning for popular á la carte dishes like pan-fried barramundi and eight-hour slow-braised Milly Hill lamb or the signature dish – whole suckling pig roast (48 hours’ notice required).

On a recent trip to the Hunter on a Monday and Tuesday we were in a quandary over where to eat on a Monday night. Fortunately The Cellar is one of the few places open for dinner on Monday nights. Luckily it is also a very pleasant and welcoming place to dine as well as having a menu that will please everyone.

I had the duck confit which came with shallot tarte tatin and chestnut purée and my partner had the lamb rump with Parmesan slaw and he chose a sauce of horseradish cream fraiche. We shared a salad of rocket, roast sweet potato, avocado and pine nut with raspberry and parmesan vinaigrette. The food was all lovely and unlike a lot of places, the servings were ample.

The wine list, as one can imagine in the Hunter, took up the whole back of the menu. There was a fine selection of wine by the glass and we ordered two different glasses each.

We were the first to arrive that night and we're given a seat near the fire. A very efficient and friendly waitress looked after our every whim all night for which she was justly rewarded with a bigger tip than I would normally leave.

Altogether a wonderful evening and if it is slim pickings again tonight, we would be more than happy to dine here again.

Many good resturants in the Hunter Valley, but none better for food and service. Intriguing tastes and favors highlight this resturant. Reasonable prices and impeccable service. We would come back again.

We recently stayed at the Mercure hotel next door and were looking for something casual rather than fine dining. We decided to try The Cellar based on the menu read on line. We arrived right on 6 pm to a lovely warm room. The fire was going and we sat nearby so lovely. The service was excellent form the beginning and we enjoyed our meals. I had the pork and my husband had confit duck. Lovely tasting food for both. We did order side of pomme frittes and Brussel sprouts (not usually a Brussel sprouts eaters, but we decided to try and loved these) Though probably didn’t need the sides because the servings were extremely generous. A wonderful night in the Hunter Valley and thoroughly recommend. PS the were only three other couples in the restaurant for this mid week meal.

The food was delicious and tasteful. Atmosphere was good not great though. Was a tad overpriced. Overall would recommend.

Our party of four adults had a fabulous evening meal here. We each had a main while only the two men in the group had room for dessert. The meal was impeccably presented and offered great value for money in an inviting environment.
