Attraction details
Owner description: Australia's first boutique winery, Lake's Folly was established in 1963. A small, true 'estate' producer with only 30 Acres (12 Hectares) of vineyards, Lake's Folly's wines have been grown, vintaged and bottled on site since 1963. ONLY TWO WINES ARE MADE: a Cabernets (Red) blend and a Chardonnay, which are available in limited quantities and are highly sought, selling out each year through Lake's Folly's Cellar Door and loyal Mailing List. The Cellar Door is open 7 Days (when wine is available), but is closed for several months each year after the wines sell out. * Five RED Stars Winery - James Halliday * Best Small Cellar Door, Hunter Valley - Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine: 'Australia's Best Cellar Door Awards' 2015 * 'Most Collected Cabernet' - Australia's Most Collected Wines 2013 (Wine Ark) * 2nd 'Most Collected Chardonnay' - Australia's Most Collected Wines 2013 (Wine Ark)

Lake's Folly only produces two wines, simply a red and a white. They are of the highest quality. They onlyt make a small quantity and if you visit late in the year the cellar door may in fact be closed.

“Too expensive”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

Small boutique winery. Not much choice & too expensive for the quality. My husband said their Chardonay was nice but I did not try.

“A must visit for any for wine lover”
Reviewed July 29, 2012

Lakes Folly is a fantastic winery that focus on what they do well making cabernet and chardonnay. They only make two wines but both of them are spectacular. For such a highly rated winery the staff are laid back and make you feel welcome.

“Good wines, but not much variety”
Reviewed July 22, 2012

Lake's Folly has 2 wines on offer only. Though the quality was undisputedly good, we felt that this was a wasted trip as we could have sampled more wines in the time we were there.

“A classic winery”
Reviewed May 17, 2012

I'm old enough to remeber when Max Lake was almost a revolutionary - no-one ever made Cabernet in the Hunter yet Max showed us it was possible.
I still have many of his wines in my cellar - they are probably way beyond their peak but I cannot imagine a cellar without Lakes Folly in it.
Whilst it is many years since the "new" owners have taken over Lakes Folly they have not only carried on the traditions of Lakes Folly, they have if anything enhanced it - a difficult task but they have achieved it.
When I talked about my old Lakes Folly they offered to "upgrade" them and do a swap - the new ones are probably better but I still like a balance of history with the current quality.
