“A good base for the Hunter”
Reviewed April 16, 2009

The studio rooms are quite small, so make sure you like your traveling partner! But they are clean and not overly dated. Nice little patio area with table and chairs to enjoy the sunset or sunrise (depending on your preference), or have a sneaky cigarette!

The buffet breakfast was overpriced for what was offered. It seemed as though they had run out of most things and we got there only 30 minutes after the opening time. We didn't eat dinner on-site, preferring to sample some of the local restaurants.

Be careful is you're coming in after dark, it's easy to get lost with all the identical huts!

My only complaint would be to do with the customer service, a smile doesn't cost a lot ladies! My partner left the mobile phone charger in the room and when I rang to organise it to be forwarded to us (less than 12hrs after we left) it seemed to be a major drama to have housekeeping check the room! Surely they have to clean it regardless. Then the charger was sent to us COD - it cost $20 for me to collect from the post office!!! And we only live an hour away, I would have been happy to collect it, or they could have popped it into a $5.50 prepaid satchel and charged it my credit card. A costly lesson!

We stayed here for two nights on a road trip from the Gold Coast to Sydney. We arrived shortly before 6pm when reception was closed and the woman wasn't particularly friendly, but we put it down to her wanting to go home. My husband asked her if they had a computer with internet access that we could use because we needed to get an email confirmation for our wine tour the following day, but her reaction was "yes, but not one you can use. There is wifi in the rooms" charming, if we had a laptop with us, would we have asked to use their computer?! The room was more like a self-catering apartment and had a living room with a small kitchen, plus the bathroom and bedroom. It was clean and tidy and perfectly adequate for a couple of nights. The restaurant was closed both nights we were there, although we weren't told this when we checked in, so we got in the car and had a drive around to find somewhere. We came across the Hunter Valley Gardens, which is just around the corner from the hotel, so took the car back so we could both have a drink. The walk back to the Hunter Valley Gardens was pretty scary, given that there is virtually no street lighting in the area and the main street light on the junction was not working. We resorted to using our mobile phones to shed some light and as a warning to oncoming motorists who were driving quite fast given the lack of light and bad roads. Anyway, the Steakhouse was good and so was the Cellar restaurant we tried the next night, which is in the Gardens, but further round. The first morning we were there we were heading off on a tour of the boutique wineries - would absolutely recommend Boutique Wine Tours, run by Brian and Delia Metcalfe - and went into reception asking about taxis to take us to a restaurant further out. The same woman was on reception and her answer to our query was "haven't got a clue" there was no offer to find out, no suggestions for closer restaurants, nothing! She has to be the rudest receptionist I've ever had to deal with, and believe me, there have been a few!!! So, if you want to stay in Pokolbin this place is ok, but I'm sure you'd find a more personable service elsewhere! We were told to try Peppers, but unfortunately they were booked.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. This was our first time in the Hunter Valley and was happy with our choice. The Leisure Inn is in a great central location to the wine region and walking distance to the Hunter Gardens and a few restaurants. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant and was happy with the meal. The only thing that lets this hotel down is the accommodation. While comfortable and well equipped the walls are quite thin and we did not have much sleep on the 1st night due to noisy neighbours. The 2nd night however was very peaceful. I know they try and space people when they don't have many bookings, but would not like to spend a few nights with side by side neighbours.

We arrived at the hotel at about 8pm to find reception shut and two keys left for us rather than one. We used the phone by the lock box and got through to someone that was some distance away and couldn't really help. We took one set of keys and left the second in the box and explained to reception the next morning. For some reason the internet site had made two bookings for us!

The restaurant was just closing when we got there at 8:30pm and we had to drive to another hotel (Harrigan's Irish pub and accomodation) to get some food (the best sausage and mash in Australia).

The whole area around Pokolbin is sparsley spread out and not very well lit with no footpaths and so walking to the Chinese restaurant up the road was a little dangerous.

If you want to visit the wineries in the area, a minibus tour is recommended. You get to try approx. five different wines at each of the five different cellar doors you visit with no obligation to buy. If you go to the wineries yourself there is a bit more pressure to buy and you only get to taste the wines that you are interested in buying.

  • Liked — The winery trip (but you can book this at any hotel in the area!)
  • Disliked — check-in and restaurant opening

We have stayed here three times so far and I really like it. The buildings are free standing and modern. Each building comprises of two sides, we had a studio unit and the other side was a one bedroom unit. Management seems to allocate only one couple per building if they are not booked out as it makes it very quiet and private as there is no noise from the adjoining unit. The studio is all we needed for our stay. The room is compact and the bathroom has a spa/shower bath with wall heating. I would like to see a clothes dryer in the rooms as it is hard to get ones towels dry each day as there is no daily room servicing if you have a cheap package like we did.

The Oaks Company sold us a voucher via phone for three nights midweek for only $259 all up!

We played tennis in the morning (just book ahead at main desk).

Also book ahead at the front desk to use the bbqs.

We toyed with the idea of walking to Tempus Two or Harrigans Pub at night but without a torch we decided the one minute drive in the car was a better option. So, take a torch if you want to walk there and back for dinner.

Harrigans and the Thai/Japanese restaurant are both good and I would prefer the Thai restaurant at night, the mains were about $17.50 and up and with a bottle of wine it cost us for two entrees, one main of duck and one sweet, $85 and we were happy with that, for $8.00 corkage you can take your own wine.

The Hunter Valley Gardens are lovely but there is an entry fee. It would be possible to take a picnic lunch and find a spot under a tree, otherwise there is a nice cafe.

If we can get another cheap deal we will stay ther again it is very nice. I like it better than hotel or motel type accommodation.

Stayed here for 2 nights midweek with my partner. It was very quiet. We enjoyed using the tennis court and swimming pool and spa bath in the room.

Hotel restaurant isn't open Wed and Thu nights so ate at nearby Thai/Japanese restaurant Oishii) at Tempus Two and Harrigan's Pub. Both were quite good.

The resort is made up of many cabin/hut like structures. The studio contains a queen size bed, a table and two chairs, a kitchenette with microwave and sink but no hotplate, a TV and a DVD player. DVDs can be rented at reception. The bathroom contains a two person corner spa with the shower overhead. The cabins are air conditioned and there is another table and 2 chairs on the patio. We found the room to be clean and in good repair.

The huts seem far enough apart to not get too much noise but there are two studio apartments per hut. So if you have noisy neighbours it could be a problem. Also, you probably wouldn't want to be looking for your hut if you are a bit worse for wear after your wine tasting as they all look just the same. The grounds are landscaped and well maintained.

The resort is handy to McGuigan's and the Cheese Factory and a short drive to the Hunter Valley Gardens. It is also fairly near the few shops in the area and a great central location to visit the surrounding wineries from.

While not luxurious it is clean, modern, well maintained and quite good value for the Pokolbin area.

Remember to bring any medications with you as the nearest chemist is in Cessnock.

  • Liked — close to vineyards, value for money for area, DVD player and spa bath
  • Disliked — The studio apartment is a bit on the small size.
  • Tips/Secrets — Bring food, drinks, snacks, medicine etc with you as only limited things available nearby and what is available is very expensive

Every time we go to the Hunter Valley now to sample to produce we stay at Pokolbin Hill. It is clean and neat. Quiet when you want it to be and only a short walk to the Pub and the shops if you run out of anything - or need to have some beer instead of wine! We have stayed as a group of up to 14 and have gone there as a single and married couple and never have had anything to complain about. It is not the most luxurious place in the hunter but it is comfortable and is a really good base for touring the wineries! Hard not to recommend
