An excellent, but all too brief, stay at The Carriages while spending a day and night in the Hunter Valley. Rated in all aspects as very good but what made in particularly special was sitting out on the veranda in the morning having a very good continental breakfast accommpanied by the wonderful dawn chorus. Reminded us so much of a previous life in East Africa. Also many thanks Ben for the advise for our return trip to Sydney via Wollombi and St Albans - another adventure in itself. We will come and stay with you again. Oh and mustn't forget to mention your own Shiraz - definitely some of the best we drank in the Hunter Valley and definitely worthy of the Gold medal

I decided to take my wife to the Hunter Valley for a 4 day break, & also to see a concert at the Hope Estate outdoor concert venue. We booked the Gables suite at The Carriages based on its central location & the reviews here. We were not disappointed. It is a quiet and private setup right in the centre of the Pokolbin area, however, tucked away like a retreat. Ben the host provided phone numbers for a winery tour and horse riding. Both of which were well organised and totally enjoyable. The guest accommodation is a few hundred metres from the reception so we didn’t see the staff at all during our stay. Breakfast is silently delivered to you door at 8.00am each morning. The Gables suite is huge. Leadlight windows, country furniture, nice bathroom. Really good value. With a cute little balcony overlooking a basic garden and bush area. As our last day was Valentines day, I had asked if the hosts could organise some flowers delivered to our room with breakfast. This was done for us and we were so pleased with our lovely hosts.

I also recommend Roberts restaurant which is walking distance. 5 star service with superb food. The Mills restaurant is also splendid with its views across the valley.

I would definitely recommend The Carriages to anybody travelling to the Hunter.

A perfect little getaway weekend spot. In the heart of all the vineyards yet still tucked away and hidden. Very quite and relaxing, we took a nice a walk around the property and got some great photos. The staff was very helpful and informative, the owner helped with directions on an scenic route back to Sydney, it was beautiful! The room itself was exactly what you would expect from a tucked away cottage in the vineyards, antiqued furniture, beautiful bed, and gorgeous views. In the morning, we woke to a plenitiful basket of food, fresh croissants, muffins, toast, orange juice, milk and cereal that you eat at one of the many tables on the veranda. Although there are no restaurants at this particular spot, there is one within walking distance (~2blocks) and many others within a short drive.

We booked to stay at The Carriages as a last minute trip, we were staying in Sydney with our daughter, who recommended the Hunter Valley for a visit. As our holiday was coming to an end, we only booked to stay 1night, booking 2 rooms in the main house. When we arrived, we were greated by Lise, who said she had upgraded one room, so we call be next to our daughter.

The house was superb, built 20 yrs ago, with such a good design and furnished very tastefully, olde worlde, therefore, does not date. It had a wrap around verandah with lovely comfy wicker furniture. Our breakfast was delivered in a large wicker basket, everything and more than we could eat. Cereal, fresh fruit, bread, coisants, muffins, fresh orange juice and milk. All presented in proper dishes and baskets, no plastic cartons. The room was also fitted with a fridge, mini oven (to warm the coisants), toaster, kettle, all the required crockery and glasses, there was no "make do" here. We were able to lay all our breakfast out on the table on the verandah and enjoy it "al fresco".

The setting for the house was perfectly secluded, with beautifully maintained gardens and a delightful pool, beware of the ants if you stupidly sit on the ground!! I have never heard such loud crickets. We were so happy and relaxed there from the city, that we booked to stay another night, would have stayed more had we not have other arrangements already.

Lise and her husband (sorry I cant remember your name), were such great hosts, even ringing us in the evening when we were out to dinner, to advise us the kangaroos were in their garden, so to call at their house on our return. Nothing was too much trouble. They have built a beautiful house and environment for their guests, and we would not hesitate to return if and when we visit Australia again.

Thankyou to you both for a wonderful relaxing stay, wish we lived closer, to make it a weekend retreat, maybe one day.

John, Viv and Lauren Jones from England.

Ben was most welcoming and our stay at the Carriages, although short, (just one night,) was superb! The Carriages lie right in the heart of the Hunter Valley and they nestle in the same compound as the superb Roberts Restaurant, which is also magnificent!

We had a corner verandah room, which was simply brilliant. We were impressed to find facilities for making filter coffee in our room, along with the jugs of milk and chilled water in the fridge and also an ironing board etc.

Although we didn't use the pool or tennis court on this trip, they were enticing.

As others have mentioned, the breakfast basket will really start your day in style. There was easily more than enough fresh pastries, bread and fruit to go around.

Top place to stay!
