This was the first stop on our wine tour, and what a surprise it was. There is also a little Olive barn on the site, and needless to say, after we taste tested the produce, which they encourage, we left with chutney's, oil's, and other produce. Onto the winery, and the nicest drops we had. as a result, we left with more of the local produce....yummmm

We visited Pokolbin this weekend on an organised wine tour we had a fantastic day up until we arrived at Pokolbin. The Man behind the bar insisted we pay $3 per head for the wine tasting, whucih non of the other wineries did, he also complained about us turning up at 4 oclock, which was the time we were booked in for. Needless to say we all walked out and went to Invanhoe where we were welcomed with open arms.

I was throughly conflicted on whether to write this review. On one hand, the selfish half of me wanted to keep this vineyard a secret and not risk it being commercialised. The better half wanted to share this wonderful vineyard and give it the credit it deserves - it would be my contribution back to the Tripadvisor community.

For a small vineyard, it punches above its weight. Its wines, in particular semillon, shiraz and riesling, are amazing and reasonably priced.

If competition medals and trophies is your thing, they have heaps. Check out their website. Their 2011 Riesling won Winestate magazine's 2011 riesling of the year. I absolutely love their semillon. I bought their Ken Bray 2009 semillon and served it to my friends at parties - more often than not, they would be pleasantly surprised and asked me where it is from.

Wines, ratings and medals aside, a trip to this cellar door is always a treat. It is how wine tasting should be. Graham, the cellar door manager, loves to chat about wine and I don't mean in a pretentious way. There is no pressure to buy. Sometimes I think he forgets that he is running a business. Cherrie, one of his assistants, is friendly and knowledgable. It doesn't matter if you are an expert or beginner. As long as you come with an open mind and a genuine interest, you won't be disappointed.

I should mention that the old cellar door burnt down last year and the new one should be open for business end of this year or start of next. For the record, I have no personal or business relationship with the vineyard. I love wine, go up to Hunter quite a bit and enjoy looking for hidden gems. I visit the popular vineyards such as Lakes Folly, Brokenwood and Tyrrell's but the highlight for me is always Pokolbin Estate Vineyard.
