Owner description: Located along McDonald's Rd, Pokolbin is the Ballabourneen Wine Company Cellar Door. Ballabourneen Wine Compnay is a small producer of an exceptional range of Hunter Valley wines. Award winning winemaker Daniel Binet is a young gun who is creating wines that will tantalise your palate. The Ballabourneen label first emerged when husband and wife Alex and Di Stuart moved to the Hunter Valley, NSW Australia over 23 years ago and planted a small block of Chardonnay, Verdelho and Shiraz. Since then the range has grown to include Sparkling Chardonnay, Semillion, Gamay Noir, Chambourcin, Cabernet Blends, Moscato and a Liqueur Shiraz. Ballabourneen (pronounced Balla-bour-neen) is a Gaelic name that refers to a town road, as close as we can work out. The original Ballabourneen vineyards were on a property close by The Old North Road of convict built fame, which when subdivided, was simply called "The uextensive wine list makes this cellar door a must when visiting the Hunter.

Ballabourneen is our FAVOURITE vineyard in all of the Hunter Valley! We're locals and also member's of this vineyard...yes it really is that awesome we had to join! If you like your Red wine then go no further!! The reds are incredible :-) I don't normally drink white wine due to personal preference however I do enjoy most of the Ballabourneen white wine's. The staff are always so nice and accommodating, cannot fault them in any way.

The 'big name' wineries are what the wine tour companies take you too but if you want a proper taste of the Hunter only from cellar door then this has to be you're FIRST stop!! After tasting the wines from Ballabourneen everything else will be hard to compete with.

We always go through our 6mthly delivery in a lot less than the allotted 6mths...so good!!

We recently visited Ballabourneen Wine Co on a winery tour and were very impressed. The view was beautiful and the wine was excellent (and there is a very extensive range). In addition, the staff were engaging and helpful; they even helped us arrange for our purchases to be posted back home.

Pip was engaging, knowledgable and gave excellent service during our wine tasting. Not only that, she balanced us with other guests without making us feel abandoned or unwelcome.

The wines were excellent - and it was great to have an explanation of each one. It is possible to buy just a bottle (although we ended up with just enough to max out on our limits for duty free).

In addition, you gave buy olive oil (in various guises) along with a cup of coffee (to help dilute the alcohol!).

Would recommend anyone to go there and taste. No pressure, no hurry!

Ballabourneen cellar door was our first stop on the way into the Hunter and our last stop on the way out! The staff were just incredibly warm, friendly and generous and made you feel welcome rather than making you feel 'obligated' to buy and as though you should leave almost as soon as you arrived (which many other cellar doors tend to do!). The wines were delicious, extremely high quality and we have joined their wine club (with delightful Ballabourneen packs arriving at six monthly intervals to our great joy and delight). It was such a pleasant experience (staff and general atmosphere made it) ... and of course the delicious wines, that we had to go back and scoop up more of their wine on the way home. Do yourself a favour and make sure you stop at Ballabourneen. (their logo has to one of the better logos I have ever seen on a wine label as well ... not that that makes any real difference to the taste of the wine of your experience ... just thought I would mention it!).

This cellar door has a great view, great customer service and lovely wines. It was lovely to sit and enjoy a nice cup of coffee during our wine tasting day as well.
