Mercure Resort Hunter Valley Gardens

Hotel is situated in a great position close to hunter valley garden village and lots of restaurant options and wineries. Service at the front desk is very helpful and friendly and they go out of their way to check everything is ok and offer information about the local area. The room we stayed in had lovely high ceilings and was spacious, very comfy bed. One thing that wasn't really up to scratch are the amenities as there are only shampoo conditioner and body wash none of the extras that can be handy like combs razors etc. It was good value and I'd stay here again.

I'll state my beef up front. I find the credit card fee charged by Mercure hotels unacceptable. Fortunately we paid in the US in advance and weren't charged a fee, but nonetheless, this is the first hotel I've experienced where that's an additional charge. I was told by the front desk that is a Mercure standard policy. I promised to mention it on trip advisor.
On other things;
Overall, the room( #803) was very comfortable, clean and spacious and the needed air conditioning worked very well. There was a strange odor coming from a drain in the bathroom, and I was advised that it's caused by runoff from the winery next door.

We didn't have breakfast at the hotel, as we found the cost of a full breakfast at A$ 32.00 per person, ridiculous. So we ate at a small cafe which was very good and 1/2 the cost.

On site parking is free but as with other Mercure's there's an in room charge for internet access. One can use the lobby computer for 15 minutes for free.

The location is very good and the staff is efficient.

Location

The Hotel is well situated in the heart of the main vineyards and actually connects by a short walkway to Mc Guigans cellar door and delicatessen. Parking it would seem for most rooms is motel style at the front door as most rooms are single story.

Room

The room itself is quite attractive, not that large but big enough for two and have a small semi secluded patio which you can sit out on. Since wine glasses are provided and it is a very short walk to a well-stocked deli next door it is very easy and pleasant to create your own gourmet snacks and drink a wine of your choice “al fresco” on the patio.

Bed was comfortable and air con worked fine, a failed bedside light was replaced quickly, the walls appeared to be reasonably soundproof.

There is a sunken bath with a skylight roof above, which we did not use but the shower which had two heads and worked well.

The pool smelt strongly of chlorine so presume it was still safe, but had a somewhat milky appearance detracting somewhat from the experience, a large fountain in the garden had bright green water flowing so it seems in general that is some attention to water conditioning would be beneficial.

I am a Platinum member of “Le Club” which I presented on arrival to be met with supreme indifference and a request that I can present it when I leave to collect the points. Maybe I am missing something or maybe too long in Asia where loyalty programs seem to count but there seems little point in having a tiered loyalty program if there is no difference at all in how members are treated or rewarded; only after some fussing around on departure did they somewhat reluctantly agree that in fact internet was gratis as a Platinum member.
Dining
We dined out one evening at the Steak House restaurant which was a 3 star event, the food quality was passable but my meat was not hot (although vegetables were ) the service seemed to be struggling with the numbers, the main complaint we had was the ambiance which was hard wooden floors and tables resulting in considerable noise not assisted by being seated next to 7 children under 10. It is clearly catering for families probably more so as the “Christmas Lights” show is on at this time. Would suggest if you do not have children it may be better to eat later unless you do not mind a degree of mayhem. By the way we did try the TA Number one restaurant in Hunter Valley ( Botanica ) and found this worthy of votes.

TV seems a little confusing as it seemed to have cable TV but at the same time very limited channels indeed, internet speed however was OK.

All in all a satisfactory experience but with a little bit of tweaking could have been so much better. Would probably stay here again simply because the position and room/patio worked well for us.

Room Tip: Would choose rooms on Western side of complex away from the road

My husband, myself and our 2 and a half year old daughter stayed for one night to see the Christmas lights in the hunter valley gardens. Perfect location. We walked to the gardens within 10 mins. The pool was a lovely area although a little mirky however full. Breakfast was good and the steakhouse food for dinner was excellent. I would stay here again.
