“The meal from hell”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

The stay in the hotel itself was good except for one thing and that was the meal in the restaurant for dinner. There was only one other couple in the restaurant when we arrived at 1828 hrs, the early dinner was so that the wife could get back to the room to watch the voice. Our order was taken and the bottle of wine arrived at the table. The restaurant filled quickly with other guests, all having their orders taken the same as us. As we were seated at the window I was more interested in the conversation I was having with my beautiful wife rather than what was happening behind us.
After about 45 minutes the bottle of wine was almost finished and the other guests in the restaurant had started and almost finished their meals. The waitress was called and the question was asked where was our food? The waitress returned a short time later with the excuse that there had been a technical issue with the order getting to the kitchen.
As I work in a service industry myself it amazed me that we had to ask the question of the waitress's where was our food. The waitress's had walked past our table several times to serve the other guests, but it didn't tweak that we didn't have our meals.
You can apologise all you want but this was pathetic.
You can also ask why nothing was said earlier from us but I do like to give people the benefit of the doubt and naively thought that they would figure it out for themselves.

Spent one night at the Mercure Resort on a visit to the Hunter Valley Gardens. This is a very nice up-market hotel with very good quality rooms. No complaints. Relatively expensive accommodation, but then all Hunter Valley accommodation is expensive. Very expensive breakfasts (so we didn't have breakfast). WiFi was not free (so we didn't use it), which is annoying in an expensive hotel, when lower cost hotels provide this for free. The Hunter Valley Gardens are brilliant and well worth a visit.

Was best man at a wedding here during the weekend. Wedding day rained but was beautiful to have everything inside in front of the big open fires.
The staff did an amassing job helping get everything set up.
Food for the wedding was great.
Breakfasts a bit pricey if you pay on the day but you can book ahead for $10 less.

The resort rooms are looking a bit tired but are kept clean. Great location right in the middle of pokolbin and within walking distance to Harrigans hotel for dinner and some music

We stayed here in the deluxe room in October 2012 for 2 nights.
Room was lovely, comfortable bed nice, nice furnishings, big fridge - to fit the birthday cake!
Bathroom was amazing!! The spa bath was huge so was the separate shower all nice modern & clean fittings.

Reception staff were great, everytime you walked past them they would look up and say good morning/afternoon.

We had the pool and spa to ourselves, it was a lovely sunny day so we made as much use of it as possible. - There was a wedding in the main room so was a bit of pain to walk around the building just to get to the bar to order drinks.

We had breakfast the first morning, quite expensive. Condiments in the bowls looked like it had been sitting in it for weeks and just extra placed on top, didn't look too appealing.

We ate at the Steakhouse on one of the evenings which happened to be the birthday night so we were looking forward to a nice meal. the entree's were amazing, presentation was great and tasted so so good! It was a shame that the mains didn't follow suit. We both ordered steaks. Mine was cooked how I like it and came with kipfler potatoes and chorizo - I hope they have improved the presentation and size portion of this, 5 potato slices 5 slices of chorizo lined up alternatively. I ordered with the peppercorn sauce which consited mainly of cornflower. My partners steak came out warm at best with the cafe de paris butter remaining in its circular shape on top of the steak which proved that the steak was cold.

We were the last guests in the restaurant when someone from the kitchen came out in their chef uniform looked at the wines on the centre table and continued to pour himself a glass and give us a smile.

We filled out a satisfaction form at the end of our meal and handed it in, we didn't feel the need to make a fuss but as they gave us a form we thought we would. The young man serving us was disapointed that we hadn't fully enjoyed our meal and very kindly offered us a drink each in the bar.

All in all we had a great time here the location is perfect, great rooms and great staff, I just hope that the restaurant has improved the sauces to go with the steaks!

Room Tip: Deluxe room, spa bath and a cute little outside area!

We stayed here for two nights in a Superior King Bed room.

The positives are: (i) that the hotel is well situated in the heart of winery territory with McGuigan's, Tempus Two and Brokenwood all within easy walking distance; (ii) the resort grounds are well laid out in a pleasant garden setting; (iii) you are close (also within walking distance) to the group of small shops at Hunter Valley Gardens and only a short drive to another small shopping complex; and (iv) the breakfast buffet is above average for hotel style accomodation; (v) service at reception was friendly on each occasion.

Why then just an average rating? Its mainly a range of small things: (i) poor value ... the room was a fair size but nothing special for a cost of $284 per night and when you add the cost of breakfast ($32 per head - unless you book through Wotif or book yourself in for breakfast the night before in which case it is $22 per person) this is a pricey option compared to local B&Bs); (ii) the room was noisy ... there was a fair amount of external noise plus there was a vent duct in the bathroom which was noisy and kept clicking itself on and off, seemingly randomly, which was annoying anbd loud enough to be disturbing at night; (iii) a few room maintenance things (Room 401) ... the basin in the bathroom was cracked, the door handle seemed to set up a wail when we opened it (perhaps because it was a wet weekend), there seemed to be a polethora of coffee bags each day but a paucity of tea bags and no choice of tea, etc (little things but at this price they shouldn't be issues).

Despite the good location and gardens we wouldn't stay again.

This was our second visit to this Resort and just as enjoyable. We will most certainly come again - perhaps in the cooler winter months when the magnificent fireplace in the lounge/library is lit. The location is supurb and the staff and service very good. A most relaxing stay.

Mercure is well located next to hunter gardens and a little village.Rooms are very nice and the pool was great also has a tennis court.Staff were fantastic and the breakfast was really nice dinner at the steakhouse a bit expensive , would like to see microwaves in the guest rooms as food works out expensive when travelling with kids. Will return as it was a relaxing few days away from home.Beds not the most comfy maybe with a matress topper would improve as most places now have toppers.
