“Great place for a small conference”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

I co-organised a small conference / workshop (~60 people) held at the Hunter Valley Resort in July 2013. The staff at the Resort were wonderful and extremely well organised; setting up the conference was a breeze, and it was considerably cheaper like-for-like than any of the other venues in the Hunter Valley that I looked at. The venue itself is well situated in beautiful countryside and nicely secluded. The rooms are perfectly fine, and the breakfasts are great. The only very slight criticism is that the evening meals were OK but not great (although this may be a consequence of the trials of cooking for 60 people - I've eaten in the resort's restaurant before and had an excellent meal). Delegates only had good things to say about the Hunter Valley Resort, and we'd certainly consider coming back. Highly recommended.

Well...should've taken the previous review "Fawlty Towers reincarnated" seriously, because that's what it is. We booked on Wotif last minute because we only wanted one nights accommodation & the Hunter Valley vineyards don't have a lot to offer for one night. So we thought we would give Casuarina a go despite bad reviews. We arrived & went to the restaurant to ask where reception for accommodation was because there was no signage for a reception. The restaurant had no idea as they are a separate business but suggested to try the house nearby. So my husband knocked on the door several times...no answer although he could hear a tv on. We walked around the accomodation there was no sign of any life. The yard & surrounds were dirty & rundown. Cigarette butts littered the verandah. My husband at that point decided we were not staying. If the surrounds were any indication we didn't want stay in the room, even if we could find someone to let us in to our room. We have been in touch with Wotif to try to get our money back & suggest they consider taking them off their site.

We stayed her in April on the second night our our road trip from Sydney to Cairns; we are Brits an were looking for a range of sights and experiences in Australia. I have read some of these reviews and I don't get it...I don't know what people are looking for; if you book a remote small resort you sort of expect small roads, not much going on etc....
We had had a busy couple of nights in Sydney and wanted peace and quiet, there were few guests and we got exactly what we wanted. Sitting on a bench outside our chalet watching the sun come up, mist rolling across through the trees no sound except the native birds was truly magical.

The staff were very friendly and although we didn't eat in the restaurant we sat outside in the sun drinking the Blue Tongue Ginger Beer. We loved this spot and would come again/recommend it to other tourists. My only complaint is how hard it was to find but I blame the lack of road signs for that!!!!!

Room Tip: Get a chalet looking down over the valley

Was excited when I found this last minute though was quickly disappointed when we arrived. Whilst the room set up of 'Casanovas loft' was fun, that was the only positive. We arrived and had to call for towels, which made the person on the phone irritable, there cobwebs and dust littered throughout the room. Lots of lights didnt work, the blinds didnt close and the television had only a couple of channels to watch. The freezer was stained, there was no iron and the lounges felt dirty to sit on.

This motel has country average rooms and meal quality. A major drawback is the several hundred metres outdoors of the rooms from the dining facilities and bars. As this region can be either blazing hot or cold and wet, guests has better be prepared for the hike.

Yes we are on 80 acres - and our Spa Cottages are 300 metres from the restaurant. We feel the open feel - all on one level, allows guests to feel like they are in the country. Thanks for sharing your feedback.

We stayed for 2 nights at this hotel and whilst it wasn't perfect, it was good for what we paid. The location is great and handy to all the wineries so it was a good base for the weekend. The grounds are well maintained and the room was clean and had a really comfy bed.

Room Tip: Location is good for a relaxed weekend

There should be criteria to determine whether a place is a 'resort' or not. This is definitely no resort, just a run-down motel on the edge of town. Booked a 'wine and cheese experience'. When we arrived we were told the 'wine experience' was a 30 minute film followed by tasting in a room in the 'resort'. The 'cheese experience' was a trip to the cheese shop across the road. The room's smell was so bad we went out for the day in the hope of leaving the screen door open to improve the odour. Unfortunately the door didn't lock. After driving around the Hunter we decided to cut our losses and book into the true Hunter Valley Resort - the Sebel Kirkton where bed (in a huge, clean room with beautiful views) and breakfast (full buffet) cost less. Five stars, however, for the photographer, who manages to make this dump look presentable. Booking and reception were truly unprofessional. No stars for anything

We feel your review is a little unfair... The first words on our website are "Hunter Valley Resort is not one of those 'big' resorts, it is a country inn or lodge with 35 rooms and cottages, nestled within its own 40 year old shiraz vineyards on 70 secluded acres in the very heart of the famous Hunter Valley Wine Country." We have never promoted ourselves as a 5 star luxury resort - it seems this somehow was your expectation when you booked the $130 GROUPON Wine & Cheese voucher, it is just such a shame there was confusion with the photos/offer from the GROUPON website.
I am sad to hear you did not stay with us and at least experience all the facilities onsite - such as our Bluetongue Brewery; San Martino Bites, Pizza & Pasta; Heavenly Hunter Massage Centre; the onsite horseriding; our Wine School; Wine Theatre; or take the time to visit the Binnorie Cheese Dairy opposite.
These facilities, and what our great staff provide, is why Tripadvisor last week presented us with the 2013 TripAdvisor Excellence Award - which puts us in the top 10% of hotels worldwide.
