As I had a functions to attend in the Hunter and my preferred accommodation was fully booked I reserved at Spicers for 2 nights. My initial contact with the resort was very positive and they went out of their way to be helpful and anticipate my needs. I received a phone call in the week before my arrival to warn me not to be alarmed when I arrived to see builders and earth moving equipment as they are enlarging the resort. I was not informed of this when I made the booking and there was some noise on Friday afternoon but the weekend was generally peaceful.
The property itself is attractive but a little soulless; the rooms are large and comfortably furnished with nice linens and fluffy pillows.

Prior to checking in we were ushered into the Guest lounge but it was not really somewhere you would want to linger.

Breakfast was included in the package yet it was probably a little too ambitious which meant that it was somewhat unsatisfactory. There was a cereal buffet then a sort of degustation of various elements which were all placed on the table at once, whether you wanted them or not. The hot dishes arrived just as you were eating your cereal and you were directed to eat it up before it got cold. By day 2 we had wised up and ordered eggs to our liking and hold the pastries and tired fruit plate.

Others have remarked on the candles and the ambiance on turn down when lots of tea lights were lit in your room, I was not particularly enamored of the fragrance which pervaded the hotel but this is merely a personal preference.

On the plus side they very kindly organised a car to take us to one of our functions and as we left presented us with a packet of biscotti for the trip home.

We recently stayed at 'Spicers Vineyard Estate' for a 2 day break to celebrate my husbands 40th. From the moment we arrived until it was time to leave we were made to feel incredibly welcome. We stayed in a gorgeous room which had a serene outlook through french windows over the vineyard, enormous lounge area complete with wood fireplace and a bathroom to die for. The special touches like the personlised welcome card, the complimentary bottle of sparkling wine and mini bar, fluffy robes and slippers made it a stand out stay. When we arrived back to our room from dinner at 'Botanica', the on premise restaurant, our fire was already stoked for us and candles were lit around the room. It was the perfect ending to our perfect day. Truly this place is a credit to hosts Belinda and Mark Stapleton and their wonderful, attentive staff.I can't recommend either the accomodation of the restaurant 'Botanica' highly enough!

We went to Spicers for a trip with a couple of Friends. We were immediately impressed with the class that this venue offered.
The rooms were very clean and well kept, the fireplace was magnificent and we were very comfortable.
The staff were very helpful and attentive and even went as far as lighting candles in our room, stoking the fire & leaving us a hand written note while we were at the restaurant.
The restaurant's food was beautiful & the staff even went & got us our liquor of choice for the following evening when we had a party of guests - nothing was to hard for them.
Highly recommend this for a weekend visit - we will definitely be back

Let's start with the positives.

The rooms are nicely appointed and quite stylish. Reception was helpful and friendly. The Botanica restaurant is excellent. Fantastic food and warm attentive service. The romantic turn-down package was lovely. The complimentary mini-bar was great.

On the down side.

Unfortunately, the room was full of mosquitos. We killed half a dozen, and still got eaten alive - and this in the middle of winter.

The room was also stiflingly hot - even with the heating turned off. This, combined with the mozzies, made for a pretty awful sleep.

We only stayed one night, but had housekeeping come into the room at 8.45am while we were still in bed. I think its a bit rude and intrusive to barge in on a Saturday morning at that time - especially when we were not due to check out until 10.30.

All up, not a bad choice for the Hunter, but could be better.

Dear DevonMcSchnitzel,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on Spicers Vineyards Estate. Our entire team strive for 'great' so very much appreciate every little piece of feedback that we can learn from and improve upon. We are so pleased that you loved the room and your restaurant experience and of course found our team friendly and helpful - and especially that you loved the 'Romance Package' - this is one of our favorite little add-on's available at the property as we get the chance to make a big WOW factor for you when you return to your romantic room after dinner - it is very popular!

We were upset to hear about the issue with the mozzies during your stay. The Hunter region can suffer a little in the hot months from mozzies so during those months we keep mosquito plug in repellents in the rooms for guests. This time of the year is very unusual for mozzies and I can only imagine that the little spout of beautiful sunny weather we enjoyed for a few days brought them sooner and we have now installed the repellents much earlier in the year.

I must sincerely apologize if housekeeping woke you in the morning. I assure you that it is not practice to disturb guests early in the morning. Our housekeeping team begins servicing rooms once guests are up and about, however on occasion when we see guests are relaxed in the restaurant at breakfast time, we sometimes take the opportunity to surprise them and service their room whilst they are at breakfast for a nice surprise when they return to their room. I can only assume that the team have accidentally knocked on the wrong door and mistakenly disturbed you.

DevonMcSchnitzel if you are returning to the Hunter Valley in the future, we would love the chance to WOW you and show you why we are No.1 on Tripadvisor, and of course for you to enjoy another lovely dinner experience in Restaurant Botanica (thank you for that lovely review!). Please feel free to contact me so that I can personally take care of your stay and ensure every moment is special!

Warmest Regards

We were so lucky to choose Spicers. The whole experience from phoning in to book at the last minute, to checking in, to the utterly perfect room, and the delicious meal at Botanica on our first evening was faultless. On returning to our room, our sheets were turned down, fire had been lit, candles had been placed in the bathroom and our clothes had even been folded! What a lovely surprise and perfect touch. The bed was superbly comfortable, and after an uninterrupted night's sleep we headed to breakfast at Botanica which was included in our package. Again, delicious food welcomed us, the parisienne breakfast was ideal. The staff at both the accommodation and at the restuarant were friendly and supremely professional, we could not fault our whole experience. We stayed for two nights, enjoyed every second of it, and feel totally comfortable recommending Spicers to any of our friends or family - we have absolutely no doubt that the team would always deliver such an impeccable product and experience. And undoubtedly we will be back. Thank you very, very much.

We were here for a weekend getaway from the city and enjoyed our stay. The only shortcoming I would say is that it didn't have a spa. They told me that it was being considered to be constructed at some point in the future. I was badly in need of a massage and they were nice enough to book one for me and had a masseuse come to the room - but it was not ideal (as I prefer to be in a separate spa area and my husband wouldn't have to feel like he should leave the room).

All and all however, the place is quite lovely. Great service, food, clean, quiet and very relaxing. Also loved the fireplace and extras that came with the room (i.e., wine, etc.). But if you are looking for a complete package including access to a spa - you might want to consider other similar places with a spa. It was our fault for not checking in advance to see if they had a spa - my husband assumed that they would...

Dear Washingtonienne73,

Great news! We have actually had our plans in with council for a dedicated day spa facility for over 12 months - finally, this month, our approval came through! We will be beginning building in the coming weeks and by early next year will have the Day Spa we have been planning for a couple of years.

By the time you visit again, we will be able to offer you the Spa experience you are wanting and of course, re-deliver an amazing accommodation and restaurant experience just like your last one!
Thank you for taking the time to post a review online - our team truly appreciate your feedback!

There's nothing not to like about Spicers. We bought the mid-week Overnight Mini-break and enjoyed a totally indulgent 24hr stay where every little detail was effortlessly taken care of with grace and style. Quality inclusions in our spacious, well appointed room offered the right amount of luxury without resorting to pretentiousness, while the generous spa bath and in-room wood fireplace added to the fuss-free yet welcoming ambience. A fully complimentary well stocked mini-bar was a nice touch. A sumptious dinner and breakfast in the on-site restaurant Botanica, tended by attentive but unobtrusive wait staff, completed the package perfectly.

Given the chance I would visit Spicers again. In a heartbeat. And there is no other overnight stay I could honestly say that about.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms probably offer slightly better privacy, albeit without veranda/garden access.
