“So comfortable with beautiful views”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

We booked this hotel 2 nights thru Travelzoo @ $129 a night with a bottle of wine and a $30
dinner voucher each night + full b'fast for 2. What a bargain! We had a very big heritage room with 2 lounge chairs, a desk + chair, free wi-fi access and a newly remodelled bathroom. One downside was that the verandah is open access for all rooms and you feel a little "watched" sitting out to enjoy the expansive view. The bed was king size and lovely. Andrew on reception was more than helpful for us. The breakfast was very nice, continental with smoked salmon, meats, cheese, cereals and fruit. Then there was the bacon, scrambled eggs, poached eggs, sausages etc. Not a big choice but very nice just the same. One unusual thing was the pancake machine that turned out 2 small pancakes at the press of a button with maple syrup, berries and cream to add.The restaurant served meals with unusual additions. One night we had Daintree barramundi on pumpkin, baby spinach and cashews and an entree of spatchcock and labna (lebanese yoghurt cheese.) Newspapers were there each day, we used the pool and played
at the pool table. We asked for another night with the same deal without the extras and even
though in the hotel of 72 rooms only 15 people stayed the night before it was "no deal"! That seemed silly business practice as they didn't have linen to change etc. We went home.

Room Tip: Most rooms have a view which is expansive.

Nice at first sight but just too noisy. Wooden floors with no mats and adjoining doors, we heard every sound from next door. Neighbours sat on shared balcony socializing till after midnight, then their TV was on at 6.00 am and they were laughing and talking over the TV. Heard everything they said. We were told staff do "walk arounds" late at night but that obviously didn't happen that night. With over 70 rooms surely people could be spread out. Planned on sleeping in and leaving rested and relaxed - instead, up early and left tired and stressed. We even overlooked the mould in the bathroom. Disappointing stay.

We were extremely disappointed from the minute we entered reception. We were 'greeted' by an extremely rude person whom informed us that we did not have a booking (yet we had confirmed over the phone 1 week prior), the room was not available at the arranged time (once the woman established that we did in fact have a reservation), the hotel did NOT have running water so we were unable to shower prior to attending a wedding. We were overcharged by reception when checking out. Breakfast was charged at $40.00 per person & was extremely disappointing (and surrounded by flies inside the restaurant area!). This was the WORST hotel experience that I have had.

The Hunter Valley is sooo pretty with lots to do, its a shame the available accommodation is limited to three star but pricey options. We booked and paid with another couple, For some reason we were given rooms at the opposite end of the hotel and even though we paid the same price their room was about a third the size of ours with a dingy outlook. Weird because doing that is bound to cause tensions and a little confusion about costing. Breakfast option was a bit boarding school and bad value. But having paid so much for the room we felt bound to take it up. The bar was very under serviced when people came back from the concert. It should not have come as a surprise that people may like a drink at 10pm after a concert. The scenery was magnificent, beds were comfy. Bathroom was squeezy and the decor was cheap. Staff seemed pre occupied and a little officious, in their defence they seemed to have a lot on their plates.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony overlooking the landscape - really pretty.

We bought a high tea for two for St Valentines Day this year and with a two+ hour drive to reach there, were looking forward to a special experience. Approaching the hotel along a tree lined drive, it was situated in a lovely parkland setting that overlooked gently rolling hills with mountains behind.
However our anticipated highlight of the day was spoilt by the poor service. In the spacious lobby, there was non-one to greet us or show us where to go. Our table in the conservatory was attractively set up and looked most welcoming. But then the service continued to unravel. The waitress though friendly, told us that she was at the end of her shift and that someone else would be taking over from her half way through. Everything then came in a rush. Our tiered plates of chunky club sandwiches, cakes and tarts were hurried over, and a glass of wine poured. Our first waitress left. The new waitress attended to the only other couple there but essentually ignored us. Then she left. We waited and waited for our tea and eventually after 50 minutes my husband went to search for her.
However in spite of the thick bread the fillings for the sandwiches were different and interesting while the choice of tasty cakes and tarts was good. We were expecting a dainty high tea but these potions were too large - six huge sandwiches and eight medium sized cakes and tarts - just too much food for the occasion. My husband was not at all satisfied with his tea. Overall, for the price I would not recommend it.

Stayed one night for a wedding near by.

Couldn't believe how much this place costs. I've stayed in some mic places around the world and haven't spent this much. So i obviously expected a lot...

Check in was slow. Not sure if they were busy or just back logged.

Room was sufficient, but dated. Newish bathroom, but that was about it.

Stopped by the bar before departing for the wedding. Really poor selection of beers, but that was nothing compared to the wine range! Come on, you're in the Hunter! The bar tender also forgot out order (1 x beer, 1 x wine)... Beyond me that one!

Didn't dine here, but 2 others at the wedding did and the feed back was average. High prices, the waitress forgot the order and needed to come back and ask. Extremely slow service.

Check out was as slow as check in and we got charged for someone else's drinks from the bar. Was in a rush so didn't have time to argue.

This place has potential, but needs new management and staff. Until that's sorted out, they should be charging $50 night!

Tired old run down, needs to be renovated. Checked in then went to the room and found that it hadnt been cleaned! The staff were apologetic and gave us a room upgrade but I would never stay there again.
