Stayed with my partner here for 2 nights April 12th / 13th. Whilst we made the most of our time in Pokolbin and had a very enjoyable experience as a whole, I could not recommend this resort to anyone whilst in its current condition. Our villa with spa was what you would expect if you stepped into a 1995 time capsule, even complete with one of those old picture tube tv's.
The spa did not work and was dirty, the shower door was broken, the lounge / chairs were uncomfortable and we could hear every movement our neighbouring guests made (at seemingly amplified levels) through paper thin walls / ceilings.
We experienced very hit and miss levels of customer service here, most of the employees did not want to know us and avoided eye contact at all times, else they may have actually had to serve or assist us "the guests". Breakfast time was a site to behold and not for the faint hearted, too many people being fed in such a small area doesn't make a relaxing start to the day.
The Golf course was enjoyable but still showed the signs of neglect that plague the rest of this resort. My partner said the Elysa health retreat / day spa next door was great but I believe that is run by another company.
Overall if you got a great deal, say less then $200 per night it may be ok value, but at the prices thay are charging and the age / neglect of this resort you have so many other better valued options in the area.

We stayed at Villa Chardonnay with a party of 6 and 1 baby over the Easter long weekend. The villa had 2 bedrooms, as one couple slept on the sofabed. There was an open kitchen complete with dishwasher, oven, microwave and even little coffee machine. Washing facilities included a washing machine, a dryer, ironing board and iron. Golf was played by the boys who loved seeing kangaroos around the course. The main pool looked nice (we didn't go in as time just didn't allow for it) and loads of kids and families were running around it. The children's playground next to the pool looked pretty depressing. Being overseas visitors staying at Cypress Lakes for a wedding nearby- a word of advice to others, the area is pretty pricey for food! We rang up Thursday night to a number of restaurants to see what was open and most weren't open on weekdays, or they had a minimum charge of about $70AUD per person. Perhaps it was Easter weekend... we don't know. It really blew us away though, as we didn't prepare ourselves for the priceyness of it all. In hindsight, we should have done our research and picked up food on the way up (we drove from Sydney).
The only complaint we have was that there were no duvet covers for our friends who slept on the sofabed. When we called up the people who owned the villa, they said that was all we got. That was a little disappointing to hear after a 9 hr flight from HK and 3 hr drive up from Sydney. But anyway, we didn't let that spoil our weekend and overall, the villa was fine.
PS- Tripadvisor- shouldn't this be under 'accommodation' rather than an 'attraction'? Or perhaps be under both?

Thank siuling

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at this resort.

The site is lovely - water, trees, very close to nature and convenient for all the wineries and for visiting Hunter Valley Gardens. However, the rooms need a major update in order to match other Grand Mercure accommodation that we have stayed at.

The kitchen and bathrooms weren't as clean as I would expect, and these rooms were also a bit tired - the tiles and counters could use an update, as they are chipped and faded. The sofa and chairs in the living area were also stained and a bit worse for wear.

On the plus side, the accommodation was a decent size, the beds seemed quite new and were super-comfortable, and the food that we had for breakfast and from the room service dinner menu was good. They need a veggie option on the room service menu, though. We had a good experience with the staff too and my daughter really enjoyed the Easter egg hunt.

Overall, it was a pleasant enough stay and the resort has a lot of potential, but the rooms definitely need to be refurbished in order to compete with other accommodation in the area and to be on a par with other Grand Mercure resorts.

We had relatives visiting from the UK and they were keen to see the Hunter Valley. We chose Cypress Lakes after having inspected a two bedroom villa several months before their arrival.

We booked for four nights and at check-in were told the villa we had inspected was not available. The windows and under the eaves of the villa we were given were in a dreadful state with cobwebs, dust and grime plainly visible. The shelves inside were covered in dust. The TV did not receive Free-to-air channels, which we reported, and this was fixed the next day. We had to ask for pool towels which were listed as being in the room and a lock on one of the windows came off in my hand. The rug in the lounge needs a good clean. The actual living area of the villa was OK but still needs updating.

We had breakfast each day (included) and dinner on three nights and were happy with the quality and service.

The staff we encountered were all genuinely friendly and helpful.

Millions of dollars must have been spent developing Cypress Lakes and it is a shame to see parts of it being badly neglected. It is in a premier location, has a fantastic golf course and the surrounding countryside is picture perfect.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but would find it difficult to recommend until the cleaning of the villas are closely supervised.

We are from the UK and shared a villa with relatives from Central Coast, NSW. The Resort is vey well sited and the public facilites well maintained. We used the restaurant for some evening meals as well as breakfast and were pleased with the variety, quality and value offered. The villa offered good accommodation but was tired in appearance and needed a thorough clean. Window frames, cupboards and equipment were filthy and a deep clean is essential. Everyday surfaces and the bathrooms were OK but the more one looked, the worse it became. Staff were helpful but supervision of service personel leaves a lot to be desired. This is a 5 star resort in essence but a 3 star at best in delivery. Peter C.

We attended a conference over four days at Cypress Lakes in Polkobin and I was less than impressed. I have been attending conferences for 10+ years and this was not an impressive venue. The golf course location looked great (we didn't play though) but this was probably the only highlight. The majority of the staff were rude, except for the staff at breakfast, and one of the Managers on Duty was especially rude to me when I sought his assistance regarding stairs in our room and how to prevent our walking toddler from falling down them. After much debate and wasted time we were allocated a different room which was all on one level. The conference facilities were good but the rooms were located so far away from the venue that the hotel shuttle or your own car were required to get to the conference rooms in a timely manner (too far to walk in business clothes).
The rooms were clean, but the "gourmet kitchen" was gourmet 20+ years ago, the "state of the art technology" was probably so 10 years ago! The room had a dryer but no washing machine!? The rooms weren't serviced over the four days and extra charges were applied if additional items or towels were required. Our duvet cover and some food went missing from our room after the first night also which was perplexing! The conference food was average. There were so many flies and mosquitoes at the resort and no insect minimisation measures (as typically seen in tropical resorts) were taken. Overall a disappointing conference venue given its stunning outlook and location.

First time at The Hunter Valley. Very impressed. A beautiful place to visit. A weekend not really long enough. Cypress Hills a beautiful spot. Mercury have only just bought it. Great location. Grounds are good but the self catering apartments are dated and tired. Two hundred or so apartments in blocks high on a ridge. We were right at the top in the trees beautiful but if you want to go for swim, either get in your car or ring reception for the shuttle bus. For peace and quiet perfect and for playing golf with a group outstanding, but if you are older or not strong on your feet ask for apartment closer to main complex.
