Visited the gardens early in the morning to beat the heat and crowds. Excellent venue - well laid out and varied displays. A couple of hours of easy viewing. Returned that night for the lights (at a reduced rate) but with daylight saving the day light was still there at 7.30 pm. Toured around once and then toured a second time when the darkness was complete. Try photos with the flash off for a change otherwise photos are washed out?? Well worth the time and the crowds were no problem in early December but could anticipate increased crowds closer to Xmas day. Could be interested in a return visit at different time of the year for the seasonal displays

It's really Not a winter wonderland. As we paid there was a sign explaining they were in no way trying to recreate a snow field and they were right! A tiny area ( size of netball court) of hard packed ice that staff were having to use a pick to get some ice off it for the kids to throw a snowball. Once my 5 year old had been belted in the head by one of these ice bricks he'd had enough!! Gardens are all bare being winter and not much else to see. Obviously their marketing plan works though as there were a million people there but save your money.

Great gardens but $25.00 per person entry is a bit on the expensive side & its an extra $10.00 on top of the $25.00 entry fee to go back later to see the Christmas lights!

We just came home from a weekend at Wollombi which was about a 40 minute drive from the Hunter Valley Gardens
We decided to go on a Sunday which seemed to be a great decision. There weren't too many people about which was great as we didn't feel as though we were fighting for space to see everything.
We were impressed with the gardens from the moment we got to the counter to pay to the moment we left... it was just great.
We were given great advice by the lady at the counter about how to get around the gardens and the best time to come back during the evening for the Christmas light show.
We spend a good 2 hours walking through the gardens and just taking it all in.... wow it was just brilliant.... The Chinese section was a real high light for us and so was the formal garden... both of which had great photo opportunities.
After spending about 2 hours in the gardens we headed back to our accommodation in Wollombi for the remainder of the afternoon.
We headed back to the gardens and arrived at about 7:45.... which turned out to be perfect timing for lights which were amazing!!!
I would highly recommend the Christmas night lights for both couples and families... it was just amazing and I can't speak more highly of the experience.
The storybook section was great for kids but the highlight for me was the border garden which had the 12 days of christmas in lights and song.... I just loved this section.
We had an entertainment book which gave us a buy one get one free voucher for the day entry and if you go during the day you pay half price for the evening... In total it cost us $45... which we thought was good value... if we didn't have the voucher we still would have gone to see the gardens but would have felt it a little too expensive. If you're able to get you hands on an entertainment book voucher it just makes the value for money of the experience all that little more worth it.
All in all we had a great time and would recommend the Hunter Valley Gardens to people of all ages. You don't have to be a gardener or in to plants to be able to appreciate the creativity and skill that the HVG showcases.
