“Pleasant and delicious”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

Bistro tartine was always one of my favourite Newcastle restaurants, so I was anxious to find out if the new chef and owner would be able to match it's previous reputation. I was not disappointed. Dining on a quieter night, a Tuesday, there was just one person on the floor, but at no time were we in want of anything. Our waiter was efficient, attentive and amiable. I assume there was also just one or two in the kitchen, but again, food was prompt, well delivered and delicious. At one point when the waiter was (clearly) busy attending to another table, our food was delivered by the chef himself, who was also friendly and polite- an exciting and rare opportunity to put a face to the man behind the food. All 3 courses we had were beautiful- flavorsome souffle and succulent med-rare scallops; perfectly pink veal and fall-apart wild barramundi; moreish rum baba and superior selection of cheeses... My partner and I are both in hospitality and always unconsciously dissect our meals and experiences at restaurants. Bistro tartine was a rare experience of utter enjoyment, and we wish the new team the highest praise and best of luck in this notoriously cut throat industry. Thank you for a lovely experience

“Between Very good and excellent!”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

Cons
Bistro Tartine has slightly fallen in its standards, since visiting a year ago.
-Proper napkins were used instead of serviettes they use now.
-Service was good but not at the level what it used to be. E.g not offering more drinks throughout the meal

Pros
-We were seated and provided with water and menus straight away. 7 minutes later we were asked for drinks. Which is not bad.
-The menu does show pretty good form for a modern Australian/French resturant
-Food was fantastic. I had the duck pate to start which looked amazing, and the market fish which was the Barramundi.
-Waiter asked how were the meals, which is a very uncommon thing to hear in Australian resturants.

Prices were resonable considering "french food" which usually is the priciest cusine.

All in all very happy, if they took it one level up on the food and service I think it would attract more customers.

“Excellent!!”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

We visited on a very hot Friday night. Despite the heat (which was stifling inside and out) we enjoyed our experience very much. The meals were exquisite and well presented. The staff were extremely attentive and knowledgeable in both the food and wine served. Dessert is a must when visiting here!!!!

“Excellent”

My friend and I have eaten at Bistro Tartine three times now on our rare catch-ups. The food and service are consistently excellent. The meals are well-priced at the more expensive end of the scale and the desserts are always a delight. We've always been there on fairly mild evenings, when the balcony area is a great spot to chat. Thoroughly recommended.

Whilst my main (veal) was excellent, I could have had a bigger serve. Waitress had advised that there was probably no need for extra side (maybe I was just hungry!) Pot of chocolate with shortbread biscuit was nice, but for the price I would have expected a homemade biscuit (looked like Aldi shortbread). Our waitress was very attentive, but I expected a better meal. Friend who had homemade pasta was very pleased with her meal and my husband was also happy with his, but had the same problem as I did - size a bit on the small side
