My husband and I went to Bacchus for our anniversary and it was wonderful! We had the Degustation Tasting Menu with the added cheese course, and matching wines. What can I say- it was fantastic! The food was exciting and different- the wines were exceptional- and the service was second to none! All of the waitresses we encountered were friendly, charming, professional and well informed and a different waiter came out with every wine to explain where it was from, what it was like and why it would compliment the particular food we were about to eat. Overall, a top notch experience, highly recommended!

In spite of reviews and word of mouth feedback, our first impressions of Bacchus were not fabulous. While the old theatre setting offers lots of potential, the 'let downs' start straight away. The lighting doesn't make the most of the heritage building, and the foyer in particular looks shady and not in the least charming. LED downlights anyone? The carpet is awful.

We were shown to the 'lounge' which was OK, and the drinks were lovely, but they took ages to arrive. When we were shown to our table, the menus were presented but it took forever for our orders to be taken. I needed help with the wine list (which is exorbitant) and this took a long time to materialise. We chose the degustation menu, and to the restaurant's credit we were asked whether any variations were required to account for our individual preferences, and these were duly accounted for.

On the other hand, we the delays between courses was excessive. I also think that a restaurant of this standard should offer to decant a bottle of wine that cost $160 and was 11 years old, which it didn't. We were left with sediment in our glasses, which was galling.

The food was tasty and nicely presented. However, at not point did any of our party get a 'wow' moment. It just lacked magic, which is an unfortunate thing to report about restaurant at this price point and in this (potential) setting. The service is, in a way, similar. Polite and friendly, but that's just not good enough.

If you choose to dine at Bacchus, please don't expect 'Sydney 1 hat' standards, in spite of the prices.

This was our 3rd visit to Bacchus and whilst it was our most enjoyable, the story has been the same on all occasions.

The food is simply outstanding and deserves every accolade the restaurant receives. It is clearly Newcastle's best quality food experience, but the service just doesn't meet the same standard and we've always left feeling that we haven't received best value for our money.

Unlike our previous visits, the waitstaff were warm, friendly and unpretentious but at these prices it under delivers.

There was no one at the front counter when we arrived and felt a little uncomfortable in the vast expanse of the dining area as we waited to be greeted. The timing of our food was perfectly spaced between courses but the beverage service was tardy and several times we were left without wine when the food arrived and had to wait for it before starting the dish. On more than one occasion it was us prompting the waitstaff for more water (at the usual markup) rather than them keeping our glasses full.

Whilst these may seem trivial issues to some, at $200 a head for a tasting menu and wine I think a diner deserves perfection and we're yet to experience it at this restaurant. We would gladly eat here every night of the week if someone else was paying!

Food was well presented and was high in flavor. Small portions, as expected in contemporary fine dining. The wine matched with degustation was good, yet a little safe.

The service was very average. Little knowledge of the dishes and poor technique. It was evident that the staff were new and lacked hospitality experience.

The atmosphere was rather dull. It had no life or feel. This is disappointing considering of the buildings lively heritage.

The restaurant itself manages to tick all the boxes found in fine dining, receiving credits. But it doesn't actually provide a memorable experience worth the price paid. overall Bacchus is safe and has no real sense of identity or flare as described by post reviews.
