My husband and I ended up spending the weekend at the Clarendon Hotel in Hunter Street, Newcastle after being let down with a booking at another establishment. Fortunately, we well and truely fell on our feet. The Clarendon is in Hunter Street, Newcastle and close theatres, cinemas and the trendy restaurants in the Honeysuckle wharf area.
The only room available was the deluxe suite at $170 and we were more than happy with the room and the hotel in general. The decor was (modern) art deco and the deluxe suite was very roomy with a small kitchenette. The beds -either a king or two singles depending on how they were made up were extremely comforable as were the pillows and doona. I was concerned about the possible noise being right on Hunter Street however the double glazed windows made sure we were not disturbed. There was a small balcony with two chairs and a table for fresh air freaks like me or smokers.
The restaurant was fully booked on the Saturday night so we ordered and had it sent to our room. The food was great and well priced. The hotel is not open on a Sunday however breakfast was served in the dining room up till a very civilized 11am.
Previously on shopping trips with my girlfiends we have stayed at the Crown Plaza which is less than a block away. We certainly paid a lot more than $170 and apart from a bigger bathroom, there was little difference. The Clarendon has no flash reception area but who needs that? The staff were pleasant, the hotel very quiet - all in all a nice little find, we will definately be back.
