“A great place for some good wine”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

We visited the Reserve Wine Bar on a Friday evening where it was quite busy. There's a good atmosphere though the noise levels can be a little high at times. The wine list is impressive and the service is very good. My companion and I shared a selection of cheeses and we were pleased to see the cheese to cracker ratio in this place was good (too often not enough crackers).
Definitely worth a visit if in the area though it's advisable to book ahead.

“Serious about their wine”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

A really good wine list with plenty of variety and lots of adventurous choices if you're looking for something a little different. Whilst the food was very good, if a little over-priced, it's the choice of wine that gets you here. You'll find good quality local, Australian and international wines at good value prices.

The staff are caring and engaging and we understand that after being open for only a month that they're a little bit over-attentive.

When you look at the décor and table configuration we weren't sure whether they're trying to meet the brief of a wine bar or a restaurant. Everything we experienced had the hallmarks of a great wine bar but we're not sure that you'd get that vibe if you sat at the tables in the middle of the space rather than the benches or lounge area.

A great place for wine lovers that we expect to frequent.

“Just Great - Newcastle Is Shining”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

We planned a girls' night out. Have out grown the inner city pub scene. Thank goodness there are those out there creating great spaces for the shall we say - more mature client? Reserve Wine Bar ticks the boxes. It's funky, mature - in a renovated bank and is catering for those who still want to go out and enjoy a drink without feeling like a grandparent.
Enjoyed a Pinot Grigio with delicious oysters, duck sliders and crispy truffle salted chips.
The staff at Reserve Wine Bar are excellent. Knowledgeable, professional and friendly and they give you the impression that they want you to enjoy yourself.
My only gripe would be the acoustics - it's a little noisy.
For an enjoyable night out I highly recommend Reserve Wine Bar.

“Grown up fun”
Reviewed October 27, 2013 via mobile

Three weeks of anticipation before we finally arrived at Reserve. Saturday night and a reservation is definitely required as this ain't no bar, it's table service all the way so don't just show up as the place was packed.

The building is marvellous, the owners lovingly restoring this old bank over the past year, leaving the vault standing proudly centre stage. An amazing wall of bottles shrouds the bar, it's intense green quite full on until it thankfully changed to a sophisticated red. Our table of four was immediately welcomed at the door, seated and waters poured, menus laid out, all very smooth.

A bottle of David Hook Pinot Grigio kicked things off while we ordered from the share plates. Plates of three items were easily upgraded to four for our party, which is so appreciated.

Duck Sliders. Duck sliders people. Salty goodness on a brioche bun. I'm still enjoying the thought of them.
The angus beef was excellent but was eclipsed by the mushrooms on the same plate, dish of the night!
Truffle chips, perfectly fried and seasoned were a great compliment.
Scallops, crumbed and garnished were tasty.
Killer crispy pork belly on a delicious cauliflower purée.
An explosive pesto gnocchi with asparagus was also thoroughly enjoyed.

We then engaged the Vino Maestro, Patrick (co owner and wine expert) who steered us towards an Austrian drop called something Prussian like Gruner Veltliner, which was different and then spectacular with food. This was followed by a Gewurtztraminer, which was the perfect accompaniment to the Reserve Cheese plater of Manchengo, triple Brie, cheddar, blue, quince and sliced apple.

The only draw back was the high stools which looked funky but weren't the most comfy after a few hours. The evening ended with an aged tawny port.

Reserve is such a welcome addition to the burgeoning Newcastle wine bar scene. We'll be back.
