“lovely food, great atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2013

After rejecting a Scratchley's due to the poor attitude of the booking staff, we decided to try The Squires maiden as it was new and had good reviews. The menu looked nice and when we arrived our table was ready with a view of the harbour as requested(it was our anniversary). There was a range of patrons from young people to grey hair which we love. The music was good, the food lovely, but as discussed by others it would be nice to have more choice of vegetables. The deserts were wonderful we had the chocolate fondant & the panacotta which were both YUM!
The service was good and we were not pushed. The booking staff member was very friendly and refreshing after our experience with Scratchleys. The only fault was the weather, it was too cold and windy to walk along the wharf after dinner.

“Very Poor Value for Money”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2013

Well what a DISAPPOINTMENT I took my family to the Squires Maiden last night and i have the following to report
Atmosphere
the atmosphere was OK especially for a tuesday night. and decor is pleasant
Drinks
Drinks were over priced(7.50 for SCHOONER ) but that's what I would expect for a establishment that's trying to attract the high end .
Food
Well what a DISAPPOINTMENT . I ordered the steak and ribs for $38. (please note this only thing that accompanies the dish is chips. no salad no sauce, no vegatables. My son also ordered the same disappointing meal but he also added a mushroom sauce- the suace was in a 30mm x 30mm little container very poor serving size. He's steak was not cooked to he's order of medium it was over done. My wife ordered the medium eye fillet but she recieved it pretty rare .My daughter also ordered a Medium steak but it come out well done -no pink at all
The service is just like a pub there isnt any. You order at the counter .Our meals come out about 1hour and 15 minutes after we ordered . At no stage did anyone ask us how our meals were probably lucky they didnt it saved the embarassment
The cost of the meal was over $150 ( not including drinks and only one garlic bread between the 4 of us for starters)so I expect a little more in food quality, quantity and service

“Great atmosphere, bad value for money”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2013 via mobile

Great atmosphere but bad value for money. Steaks were expensive so we had high expectations. Basically it arrives on a wooden bread board with a ramekin size serving of mash and that's it. Anything else is extra even though that just cost about $25. Food is great and the entree was yummy but they really need to add more value for money to the meals and it will be 5 stars for me as Newcastle need something different like this.

“High Expectations”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2013

We arrived Thursday night without a booking. Had to wait about an hour for our steaks. We had the grain-fed rib eye and scotch fillet with chips and the cheese/garlic bread. I was excited at the prospect of having a nice steak but was let down by the lack of presentation. The steaks arrived on a rustic wooden board with a bowl of chips and nothing else. No salad, no vegies. Had to order that extra. The steaks were cooked nicely medium rare but were dry and somewhat lacked taste and not buttery melt-in-your mouth like I expected. The bread also lacked taste, the cheese could have been tastier. We paid $79 for this meal but certainly would not come back for steaks.

“Fantastic Ribs”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2013

Had some fantastic ribs/steak combo. Good atmosphere with lots happening. Would return again. It is one of many restaurants along the Honeysuckle Wharf area but is a bit quieter than others which was what we were looking for.
