The Newcastle art gallery is a delightful regional gallery, with a fine collection in a lovely building over two floors. We were fortunate to see a terrific Brett Whitely exhibition. Entry is free, it is well worth a visit.

Inside the striking Brutalist-architecture building lies a collection so vast, and so broad, that only a small percentage can ever be shown at one time. From Australian classics, to international icons, there is always something to be seen.

The space is utilised extremely well, with lighting and layout extremely well-considered. The current exhibition is After Five: Fashions from the Darnell Collection - a display of vintage clothing that spans 100 years. Rather than being locked behind plexi-glass, the clothing is displayed on manequins so you can examine the artistry in great detail. My favourites include the 1970s Valentino and the 1940s Dior. Oh my!

Open Tuesday to Sunday, this is a must for any visitor to Newcastle. Call ahead and see if there's something special on during your visit. From talks, to dinners, to live music, the talented staff always have something special up their sleeve.

A lovely small regional Gallery exhibiting local artists and hosting top quality travelling exhibitions as well. They also have a good working relationship with the AGNSW for artwork loans to flesh out their own collection. There are also lots of fun cafes and shops around the corner so defenitely worth a visit if you are in Newcastle.

the art work in the gallery was amazing and unique, as i went for a school excursion they actually got the artists to come and tell us what the artwork was all about, was amazing to see the emotion in the arts.

Drag me screaming to any Art Gallery! Luckily there's always somewhere to sit outside while others get lost in the Gallery... in any sort of weather! HOWEVER the Archibald travelling exhibition @ The Newcastle Regional Art Gallery has broken the chain (after 50 years)! Did you know that most of the portraits EYES in the 2012 Archibalds follow you, I thought that was some mythical illusion only the masters could paint? Without much understanding or knowledge of art this exhibition was well worth the time (couple of hours) and money ($8) to enjoy! I even discovered a beautiful set of knees that, like the eyes, follow you!
