“Dudley Beach”
Reviewed January 23, 2014

Dudley Beach is unspoiled, and is a good beach to visit if you want to steer clear of the more central beaches like Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar and Merewether. The water and beach were clean, but for swimming, probably not ideal for those who are not strong confident swimmers. There were numerous dogs running up and down the beach, something which you don't see on the central beaches. Easy to get a park.

“Beach in a bushland setting”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

Dudley Beach is set with Glenrock State Park and although maintenance of services is undertaken by National Parks & Wildlife Service, there are no entry fees. Access at night is barred by locked gate.

Vehicular access is via a narrow, steep sealed road that ends in a carpark with a delightful view overlooking the beach and the headlands that bound it at each end. A public bus service runs past the top entrance but there's no public transport down through the bush to the beach itself. Formalised pedestrian paths lead down to the beach, which is unpatrolled, ie. no lifeguards. Generally, the beach is moderately safe for swimming, although rips are common and near high tide there is usually an abrupt drop into deep water at the water's edge. Children should certainly be supervised.

Surfboard riding is permitted everywhere but most board riders favour the northern section. Quite often the combination of prevailing swell, tide and bottom topography mitigates against good beach surfing. The water is invariably clean.

Dudley has a wonderful natural ambience with bushland behind it and at both ends. A few houses on the southern headland are not that intrusive. Topless and nude bathing is not officially condoned but you can expect to encounter it towards both ends of the beach. Dudley is supposed to be dog free, but you can also expect to encounter them on most visits, often off-leash and an unwanted intrusion.

Non-swimmers should find the rock platforms with pools at the southern end of great interest when the seas are calm and tides not too high.

We've been going there for years and rate it one of the best beach destinations in the state. On Summer weekends you'll always find a good spot if you arrive before 9am, but the crowds build after that. Even then, it's nowhere near as crowded as the more metroplitan beaches in Newcastle itself.

“Dudley Beach”
Reviewed August 1, 2013

Go to this beach regularly as it's close to home. Unspolit, uncrowded and beautiful. Long sandy beach with rocky platforms on its southern side. A couple of pools which are good for swimming in [not at high tide!!]. Unpatrolled but not overly dangerous if you respect the ocean. A fantastic beach.
