“SUBO PERFECTO......”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

Coming from a culinary background we expected something exceptional and received exactly that. Took a late booking to be able to get in, booked out mid week as you would expect from a restaurant serving such quality food, and so so glad we did. Duck on broccolinni purée was perfect. Twice baked beef rib on black garlic bagna cauda was rich and delicate. Desserts I couldn't help myself. Ordered blueberry sorbet with lemon cake and freeze dried blueberries with aerated yoghurt. Then backed it up with their 75% cocoa butter choc mousse. Yes I'm a pig but looked and tasted amazing. Definetly not one to pass up. I'll be coming back with 10 of my best friends very soon. Thanks heaps.

“Exceptional”
Reviewed October 5, 2013

I can't fault our evening from food to service. As mentioned in previous reviews, a real gem, hard to find but well worth the effort. We were given a gift voucher as a birthday present. We don't eat out too much due to being fed up with having large tasteless meals, poor service and paying a premium price. But neither were had at Subo. The meals and service were both exceptional and well worth the price. Thank you for a lovely evening and the special touch of remembering the reason for the gift voucher. I will definitely be recommending to friends and will be going back again.

“Subo is sublime”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

If ever a restaurant deserves its two-hat status it's Subo. The food is a work of art - to the eye, and the palate. The friendly and fabulous welcome you receive upon entering really sets the tone for the evening. This small, perfectly formed bistro delivers a dining experience like no other.

My husband can't go past the confit chicken wings on each visit, but I love to try something new every time. The depth and range of flavours on each plate really is a marvel.

For something truly special you cannot go past Subo. But book in WELL in advance, it's deservedly popular.

“Subo excellence”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

This small restaurant is a bit hard to find along the long and somewhat dilapidated Hunter Street but is a real gem. The cooking equals anything Sydney or Melbourne modern dining can do and the service is equally excellent.
I would advise the five course menu as it allows the chef to show off his skills and at $82 was good value. We had dishes which included sea urchin, marron and beef plus a selection of cheeses and dessert. We bought our own wine which attracted $20 charge and this was fine by us.
This is Newcastle's only remaining fine food restaurant and deserves support for locals and visitors for its ability to push boundaries and take the diner to new and sometimes uncharted territory. Thoroughly recommended.

“Flawless”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

We're so glad we finally made it back to Subo after our previous visit 2 years ago. They've raised the bar to a level where they fully deserve every accolade they're receiving and are delivering quite a special dining experience.

From the moment you book, the service is professional without being pretentious in any way. The wait staff know their stuff and make you feel very welcome.

The food is simply outstanding. Great flavour combinations with some really inventive twists. Even the cutlery and crockery wowed us. The colourful plates frame the food like a beautiful piece of art.

We can comfortably say it's the best value 2-hatted restaurant we've eaten at. We feel very lucky to have a restaurant of this quality in our home town at prices that are a fraction of what they'd be in a capital city.
