“Service Needs Tuning”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2014

Thoroughly enjoyed the degustation meal and appreciated the nice table given to make a wedding anniversary a little more special but:
1. I didn't appreciate repeatedly having my shoulder nudged by the waitress' backside while she tried to cook someone's crepe suzette on the large mobile stove top, next to their table, too little room to be wheeling that thing around anyway.
2. My request for a beer was forgotten. Re-ordered after waiting patiently.
3. The air-conditioning left the place (and us) cold.
4. Our request for a pot of tea and a coffee after the last course was forgotten. Cancelled the order so we could leave and warm up anywhere else.
5. Having pre-paid for the degustation meal, I was charged $42 for 4 James Squires beers.

Having spent over $400, for the Executive Inn Presidential package including the Hobarts degustation meal, I hoped for better and will get it elsewhere next time.

“very average”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2014

Service is very friendly and professional....

However unfortunately the food here was terrible, very slow even with an empty dining room, when our food arrived it was stone cold. They use a strange system where a large kitchen caters for numerous restaurants, all courses are wheeled in on a trolley trough a side door which makes you feel like you're ordering room service. The menu is dated... the chef is trying to reinvent classics from the 1970's.... cooking methods are terrible, Duck breast had appeared to have been microwaved, overcooked with un-rendered fat and tough meat. The menu descriptions are inaccurate and deceiving "Deboned Twice cooked Quail" was in fact a Quail sussage.

I would recommend giving this place a miss, there are plenty of other nice restaurants in Newcastle.

“Outstanding!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2014

Beyond a doubt the best fine dining in the greater Newcastle area! Do yourself a favour, book a reservation, get dressed up and try it, you won't be disappointed. Beautiful intimate room inside Wests Leagues Club, we went there for our Anniversary and enjoyed the best food and wine we have had for years, and we dine out a lot! Can't fault it!

“Hobart's Hedonistic High Tea Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2013

High Tea has recently been introduced at Hobart's - beginning of September. It is only available on Sundays. To attend you MUST book as all food is freshly baked. We were a party of 5 for a special birthday treat. There are 2 options - with ($48pp) or without champagne($38pp). 4 had the bubbles, 1 did not. From start to finish, the service was impeccable. The wait staff were attentive without being intrusive. The 2 girls (Jessica and Ashleigh) were very polished without a hair out of place. Loved their red aprons. The Piper H champagne was excellent. If you want an extra glass be prepared to pay for it - $24. We opted for a cheaper $12 glass.
The food was divine. Everything was meticulously prepared and looked fabulous. The food was served on a 3 tier cake stand - cucumber, chicken, and salmon sandwiches, warm scones with champagne jam and cream; many mini desserts - including lemon meringue tart, chocolate tart, passionfruit mousse, ginger (?) and cinnamon cake, et al. We were definitely in a chocoholic paradise. Even though we were there all afternoon, there was food left over (not much but some). None of us ate dinner that night! The tea served was Britannia Afternoon Tea. One of the nicest teas I have tried. Coffee was served to the non tea drinker and not charged for.
The décor is very sophisticated and elegant. Great ambience due in part to the music choices.
To nit pick (and it was hard to find any faults) - all of us used our knives to cut the sandwiches and then also had to be used on the scones. The plates and knives were replaced about half way through but needed to be done earlier. The china used and written about on their brochure was not used except for the cake stand. Pix on brochure had the Wedgewood china as the plates, tea pot, etc. A tea menu would have been nice. No choice given with the type of tea served. These are very minor criticisms and did not detract from the experience at all.

We have enjoyed High Tea in many places - in Newcastle, other states and around the world. I put Hobart's in the top 3, just behind The Peninsula in Hong Kong and The Halekulani in Honolulu. This is high praise for me as I have quite high standards. I wish them every success and look forward to many future visits.

“Special birthday dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2013

We had the degustation menu, out of this world.
First time we have had anything like it, each course was beautiful, the service, the wines, all was just perfect.
Hard to believe its a fine dinning restaurant in a leagues club, once you walk through the doors of Hobarts you are in a another world.
Was expensive but well worth it. Want to return to try the a la carte menu.
Not for children.
