“Fantastic location - Fantastic Hotel”
Reviewed September 16, 2012

From the wonderful reception staff, to the large, clean and tastefully decorated rooms and the extremely comfortable beds - this hotel could be classed as five star. The rooms are unusually quiet, so if you are looking for a peaceful night's rest or need to concentrate on some work - this is the hotel for you. The location is perfect - walking distance to the beach, great eateries and CBD. We had the buffet breakfast and were very happy with the choices and the service. We didn't not use the in room dining service however, the choices on the menu looked very inviting and suitable for all tastes.
The only suggestion for any improvements would be, better lighting in the bathroom (for those who need to apply makeup etc) and room on the vanity to put toiletries etc (even a shelf near the vanity would suffice). These are minor issues and would probably only be required by a few.
Well done Novotel - we live in the Hunter and needed to stay in Newcastle for an event and if we need to stay again we won't stay anywhere else. We'll definitely recommend this hotel to friends, family etc.

Room Tip: We stayed in a studio room (402) and had a partial view of the water.

The Novotel at Newcastle Beach is a very pleasant hotel with nice decor and fittings. The fresh modern room and easy check-in (though it was a Sunday afternoon) service and nice dinner in the bistro downstairs made my overnight stay a delight. I will definitely consider stopping by again at this hotel next time I am staying in the CBD of Newcastle.

My stay here was great- easy to find and the surprise of hearing a ships horn after waking up. I arrived at night and didn't realise till the next morning how close everything was and the great walking opportunities. Staff were excellent and very helpful- only suggestion would be to add some snacks to the in room dining menu. Really great hotel

Stayed here last December with a group of friends for the Elton John concert. Very Faulty Towers like, clumsy service,in room dining trays sitting in corridors for 24hrs(on walk from lift to our door at least 4 rooms), no hot water for entire stay.Lots of promises made regarding refunds or a credit for another stay but after more than 20 phone calls and numerous emails nothing. A real pity as the city is a great venue now and the location is excellent.Management clearly think they dont need to keep promises and don't value customers at all
my advice is try the Crowne Plaza, have stayed there several times and a much better option.

The fortunes of Newcastle's inner city have been up an down. This hotel shows that things are on the up, along with the good dining options, open spaces, beaches and general feeling of laid back class.

I was surprised when we booked a harbour view room that there was a large building in the way. We could see the harbour, but I had to unhook one end of the curtains and rearrange the furniture to maximise the view. We were on the top floor (5). All the best views are taken by residential apartments that are on the beach side, and above the level of the hotel. The beach view rooms face south, but have a more open view of the water, as far as I can see.

The window was whistling due to a strong westerly wind, but when I rang reception, the solution was prompt, with someone coming up to sort it out straightaway. It clearly is a systemic issue, due to the latch mechanism of the window failing.

The bed was large and comfortable, with crisp white sheets. The pillows were a bit fuller than I like, but there were other pillow options that could be arranged. The room felt like it could do with a day bed to one side, it just felt a little empty. We were childless this time, but felt that one or even two cots could fit in the room. The curtains did not completely block out the morning sun, but we were happy to get up and enjoy the day. It was gorgeous sitting in the morning sun overlooking the slice of harbour and greenery that we could see from our room.

No bath in our room, and the shower head was a water saving one, with flow that was OK, but not outstanding. The shampoo/conditioner 2-in-1 combination gets the thumbs down from me, when there is exfoliant scrub, shower gel and moisturiser in the other bottles.

The hotel restaurant lacks feel and privacy - it is right at reception. Breakfast did not look great, we went elsewhere. The problem is the lack of numbers to maintain a decent hotel buffet, and there was no a la cate option.

Nearby is Restaurant Mason, with white tablecloths and understated, attentive service. Also Petit Deux, the cafe offshoot of Restaurant Deux, just down the road. Bodega is good for tapas, and Bacchus on King St is a great fine diner, just remember to book. Jonahs at Noahs is good for a lunch overlooking Newcastle Beach, and try Bar Petite, right next to the hotel, but you may need to book if you want lounges to sit on, rather than at tables.

Room Tip: The rooms to the east on the 5th floor have better views of the harbour.
