“Another Fabulous Sunday Breakfast”
Reviewed May 5, 2013

I went to The Source Cafe with two friends for Sunday morning breakfast. Service was prompt and efficient throughout. I had a pineapple juice, but dislike the fact that it is served crammed with ice cubes. Let's be honest, fruit juice is not normally served with ice cubes - it's a restaurant scam to give you a modest amount of juice and a whole load of tap water. Next time, I'll be specific, or perhaps the cafe should make it policy to ask the customer for their preference. I chose the baked beans and bacon on sourdough, with a poached egg, at $20.50. That was served hot and it was delicious. I'd have preferred all of the bacon to have been crispy as described on the menu, but no worries, it was a fine portion of food that lasted me until an evening meal at 7pm.

“Newcastle's secret gem”
Reviewed April 9, 2013

Tucked away in a discrete riverside location with views of the mariner and Newcastle's working harbour is this little gem. A delightful meeting place with outside al fresco (under the pergola) or inside dining with views. It is hard to chose whether to indulge in the all day breakfast menu or switch to the scrumptious lunch menu. AND the coffee is great.
Every plate is a visual as well as a gastronomic delight. We always have a dilema deciding which treat to try as they are all so flavoursome....so we keep returning and work our way from top to bottom on the list and then repeat.
The wine list is adequate, well priced and complimentary to the menu.
The management and staff ensure that each visit is a gastronomic reward.

“A bit disappointed...”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

I have been wanting to go to the cafe for a few years, and a meeting with old friends seemed to be the perfect opportunity. I usually rate eateries pretty high, as you might see by other reviews of mine, but I just couldn't do it on this occasion, sorry to say.

The location is lovely, but our outside table, along with pretty much all the other outside dining, couldn't take advantage of the riverfront due to the privacy screening and vines growing on the boundary.

Service was ok, apart from the waitress recommending a bread from the menu suitable for a group, then finding out that the chef couldn't 'find' the bread. She assumed they were sold out. Also one of our group asked how the fish of the day was cooked, and the waitress had to find this out also...fair enough, but not updated for start of service.

I ordered whitebait, served with chilli and Parmesan, saffron aloi and lemon wedges. The whitebait was quite dry, no sign of Parmesan that I could see, some chilli and the aloi looked at tasted like warm butter, yuk!

Others in the group had angle-hair pasta and prawns, asking for no chilli, and one other with chilli light-on. They both commented how dry the dish was also, just like mine. The light-on chilli was overpowering.

Other than this, the staff were attentive and friendly.

Maybe I was expecting too much after wanting to go there for a couple of years, but I don't think I will be back any time soon.
