“Two out of three ain't good !”
Reviewed August 4, 2012

We visited this cafe for the third time today. We really want to like this well located and pleasant cafe in the Maitland Art Gallery but yet again, they lost our order. We became suspicious after waiting about an hour for our eggs and bacon and seeing other tables who arrived after us getting their food. Sure enough, after enquiring, our waiter apologised, offered a free coffee and promised our meals would be out in 5 minutes. The eggs and bacon was pleasant enough (not great) but as this is the second time our order has mysteriously vanished into the ether, we are very nervous about returning. Please owner/manager, teach your young staff to take responsibility for their patrons. THINK about why that couple on table whatever don't seem to have their food and FIND OUT WHY. Perhaps an eagle eyed manager could sharpen up the show and steer this cafe towards the higher standard of food and service (that's a verb) that the location deserves.

“Food good if you're prepared to wait”
Reviewed May 12, 2012

We have eaten at Seraphine's a couple of times now as we live locally. The food as a rule is very good, although the menu is limited and doesn't change - ever. Tasty and nicely presented and the wait staff are lovely. It is set in the Maitland Art Gallery and is adjacent to a glassed in children's area so that you can see the kids while you sit and eat. All of this provides a basis for a lovely lunch out.
Now unfortunately, all of these positives are outweighed by the time that it takes the food to get to the table. We waited an hour on one occasion and 1 1/2 hrs on another. The food arrives at different times so some members of the party were half way through before everyone else's arrived (5 in our group). The latest time, the adults were served, and then we were told that the deep fryer was broken and that they couldn't make the childrens chips. Hmmm, 1 1/2 hrs and you couldn't have told us earlier? So they brought sandwhiches out. A cheese sandwhich with no butter. I took it back. Once again the wait staff were very apologetic and very sweet. But we won't be going back. The owners, or the management need to fix this major fault as we are not the only people that have experienced this. Many I know won't return because of the wait.

“Consistency needed”
Reviewed April 21, 2012

When you visit an art gallery there are always works that you like and others that do not quite make it for you. So perhaps it is because Cafe Seraphine is located within an art gallery that they have the same problem with their food. An artwork is the totality of its parts; they present a harmonic fusion. The same applies to food presented on a menu. If you list something as being included in a dish then it is expected that it is there. The pesto was minimal and the kumera was cut ready to be baked, not included on a hot pressed grain sandwich. I tried the corn fritters with avocado salsa. The fritters ? Lovely. The salsa consisted of a few lumps of avocado, no salsa. The BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato) was all there but the bacon was burnt and the bread was rock hard. This café holds a privileged position and needs to work harder to accept that responsibility by being consistent.

But there are definite savers. The barista certainly knows her beans, and let’s be honest, any café where you can order a pink lemonade spider can’t be all bad. The overall ambience is lively with families and art critics all mixing in together. In true art gallery form crayons come with your knife and fork and you can create your own artwork on the tablecloth while waiting for your food. If you just want coffee then you can relax on the lounges and read something from the library. And of course there is the art gallery ready and waiting.
