It was a very informative morning learning about the history of the gaol and how it operated. We thought working in the kitchen would be a job well liked by the prisoners but we were told by one of the staff the prisoners didn't volunteer for this job as they had officers working in there looking over their shoulders all the time.

Well worth a visit. Small place, but well done and educational. We stumbled on their 'show time' which was clever, interactive, funny and quite engaging. (So much so our younger one burst into tears when they pointed at her as an 'accessory to escape' - which she was - she thought she had to stay behind!)

Make sure you prep the kids. The male cell block in particular is quite dark which looks ominous to younger kids. The cells are also filled with mannequins, some of which are motion triggered and can start talking. So keep younger kids close (ours were 4 and 7) so you can provide explanation and reassurance. We also omitted the last part (hanging area) for the kids' sake.

We really enjoyed our visit to the Old Dubbo Gaol, the tour guide was excellent and shared lots of great stories with us about the gaol’s past inmates. The gaol is small but it has an interesting history and it has been beautifully maintained/restored. We worked our visit to the gaol in with a self-guided heritage walking tour around Dubbo. I highly recommend stopping into the Information Centre, picking up a heritage tour map and visiting the gaol as part of a walking tour. You can really immerse yourself in the rich history of Dubbo and the gaol was a great way to end our day. Definitely a must-do when in Dubbo!

Amazing visit to the gaol. We went just before 3pm as a guide talks about some of the escape attempts made at the gaol. The exhibits were very informative with some of them having talking maniquins. A must do if you are interested in Australia’s history or even if you aren’t.
