Owner description: Old Dubbo Gaol is a state heritage listed must see. This remarkably complete and intact gaol operated for 119 years from 1847 to 1966 and is still nestled in the main street of Dubbo. This set of 19th and 20th century gaol buildings create a pocket in time, and the experiences within brings history to life. This regional gaol is representative of powerful, surprising and dark moments in Australian prison history. We house important collections such as the hangman's kit and gallows, and unforgettable experiences such as the dark cells and the bird's-eye view from the watchtower. With guided tours, night tours, and theatrical experiences on offer, the Old Dubbo Gaol is a rare piece of history open to explore.

What a look back at how harsh prisoners were treated in the middle 1800's to the late 1960's in Dubbo Gaol. The solitary confinement cell made the hair on the back of my husband's neck stand up so eerie was the darkness and cold of this cell.

When you are inside the walls of the jail, another era appears to you. You start to realize how brave and tough our forebears were.

Day to day life was hard enough for ordinary people in that era and it was brutal inside a jail. It its not as tough as Sara Island or Port Arthur penal colonies in Tasmania would have been. Nonetheless it was tough.

Great stories, different lives. It is hard to imagine such a piece of real history in the middle of Dubbo's main drag. It was a bit strange to then walk back outside the gates and see modern banks, coffee shops and clothing stores all offering EFTPOS and giving us back our soft life.

We visited the goal in July 2013. It is a nice place to visit right in the middle if town. With our entry fee we received a map with a recommended walk while inside the goal. The goal is set up with audio in most rooms which tell the history of that section of the goal. It has been restored but felt a lot like it had just been left as was. The stories in the goal are an interesting piece of dubbo's history.
