“Not bad for a last-minute Sunday lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

We live few towns away and we've never ventured into Sutton, always sticking to our easy walking distance pubs which are in most cases fully booked. So we decided to try this pub that we've heard about and I must say they were really friendly and very accommodating. The starter, main and dessert menu had a good few options. We all went for the Sunday roast (beef & lamb) and it was very good. There were a few other tables booked, although the pub was not packed , it was enough to create a good atmosphere. We will definitely go there again.

We were very impressed with our lunchtime visit to the White Horse. An impromptu visit to Sutton turned out to be a total joy. The staff at the White Horse were very welcoming. They were, despite being very busy, attentive, friendly and worked hard to ensure we were well cared for. The service was swift and professional. The food was excellent. The quality was superb with good portion sizes and presentation. The choice of meals available was broad and a range of "specials" we're available too. Thank you to you all.

Stayed for one night for a cousin-in-law's nearby wedding and was very well looked after. We had a very rushed arrival due to running late for the wedding but they were patient and speedy with us which was much appreciated. The room was well decorated and clean and the breakfast was pretty tasty. As far as negatives go it was a shame that we didn't have a toilet in our bathroom but we had use of a private one that was next door and very clean. The shower didn't have a lot of power. Other than that I can't fault it for a brief over night stay.

The White Horse was recommended by the owner of our B&B but we'd read mixed reviews so we arrived with some trepidation but we were pleasantly surprised.

The barmaid was really friendly and very helpful. Sadly, the only beer on tap was London Pride (thankfully hubbie likes it) as other local beers were off. Good selection on the menu and we decided to go for traditional pub grub - sausages and steak. Vegetables beautifully cooked and we really enjoyed our meals.

One side of the bar has a flat screen TV which is kept to a bearably quiet level, the other side of the bar is TV-free. Usain Bolt was running in the 200m final so we headed for the TV. Not very busy, just one other person in that side of the bar, plus the barmaid and the chef at the appropriate gold medal moment!

Really enjoyed the experience - food good, well cooked and nicely presented. Nice atmosphere. We'd definitely return, especially if the local beers are on that day!

After staying here on numerous occasions, I really can not understand how people can give this place a bad review. It is a "real" country inn, pure hospitality, excellent food and excellent service. The rooms are spotlessly clean and well taken care of! Too many people expect 5 star facilities from a typical country pub. If you want 5 star facilities - check into a 5 star hotel.

Quiet and pretty setting, our room was spacious but the low and sloping ceiling meant standing up in the shower was not an option.

The full breakfast was good overall but bacon dry.

Staff were very friendly and overall a pleasant stay.

I booked this hotel for my mother and her best friends for our wedding, our most important guests really, particularly of course my mother.

When I booked they were rude when they didn't understand what I wanted, rather than politely asking me to explain they threatened to cancel the booking.

They then double booked one of the rooms and luckily I found out as it was another wedding guest who had booked it, so I was able to sort this out. Quite how they managed to double book when I had sent several very clear e mails with room numbers and names, I don't know!

I looked at the rooms personally and we ate in the restaurant before we booked and both were good, but it seems having had the feedback from my friends and the review below that this is very hit and miss and probably more miss!

The guests couldn't get in when they arrived, it was simply shut, no explanation, nothing.
The rooms were dirty, the staff rude, a near miss on the double booking and a huge flood when they got back clearly with no one there to help.

Funny as it seems with hindsight one of the guests parked and then had to strip down to his underpants and carry his wife through the water to get to the door!

I am mortified for my very important guests that they had such a horrible stay, they are now referring to The White Horse as Fawlty Towers!

Sutton is a beautiful little Sussex Village full of lovely people, a village pub should bring a community together and create an atmosphere of warmth and belonging, clearly these people have no idea what they are doing and the gift of a pub they have been given has been wasted on them, what a shame.

Room Tip: Don't go there
