“Before the walk this time!”
Reviewed March 30, 2012

Last Friday a group of six of us started the third lap of our South Downs Way walk.

Having stayed at the White Horse previously, we decided to have lunch there before we started out. Nick was very welcoming and we were provided with excellent, fresh sandwiches and drinks. We all love this place and hope to return one day. Many thanks.

Just recently went here for lunch during the week and walked in to be met by a lady behind the bar studying her till. She didn't welcome us or say anything, we waited for a few minutes and still no acknowledgement so we left - unbelievable - money just walking out the door

The White Horse is now on my regular list of places for lunch after a walk on the downs. I go here after walking up at Bignor NT. Why? A good atmosphere, friendly staff, good food and drink and a warm fire.
There are mats outside to wipe your feet after walking the downs and a choice of a public bar area with wooden floor or a more resturant type area the other side. Seemed to welcome my well behaved dog who sits beneath my table in the public bar. I have only tried the real ales and they have always been well kept - the cornish ales being my favourites. Likewise I have found their daily "Light Menu" up on the blackboard to be more than filling - a lovely beef burger with chips or ham egg & chips being my favourites. Very succulent beef and you get a little side bowl of chunky chips, they don't muck about counting out the chips and stacking them like a woodpile as another establishment I visited did. They also have an imaginative resturant menu on offer that I have not yet tried.
As to other comments about lack of locals I can only say the pub seems to welcome all types by providing both the public bar one side and lounge bar/resturant the other. I live in the Petworth area so could easily choose another pub for our after walk lunch and drink but I don't.
Price wise all the light menu meals seem to be under £10 and the beers are just over £3.
It's a real gem and the only problem will be if it gets too popular.

Six of us have just spent two days walking the South Downs Way and, luckily, the person who was organising our accommodation chose The White Horse. The rooms are lovely, each one individually designed and extremely comfortable, with immaculate bathrooms.
We had two nights dinner, bed and breakfast and Nick was the perfect host (and chef.)

The food is absolutely amazing!!

The only teeny blip for us (maybe not the other four) was the coffee maker which, I am sure is brilliant, but we found it a bit noisy and unmanageable (probably our age!!!) We would prefer a kettle!! But no great problem.

This place is fab and we would recommend it 100%.

Spent 3 days here over the August bank holiday. It was our 25th wedding anniversary and we booked room 1 which has a 4 poster. Basically its a very nice room but I have no idea why they have a tv sitting on one of the bedside tables as only one person can really see it and even that's not very easy. The biggest issue for us was the fact that on the day we arrived we were informed that the toilet seat in our en-suite was broken. They had attempted a temporary repair but this proved to be both ineffective and downright dangerous! Suffice it to say that we had to manage without a loo seat until the evening of our 3rd day. I know it was a bank holiday but places like Homebase etc were open so I don't know what the problem was.

So whilst this didn't completely ruin our stay it was very disappointing (should also mention the fact that the towel rail also collapsed on day 1 and this was never fixed!).

Despite all this I thought the location was great (middle of nowhere) and Nick and his team were good fun. Food and beer were excellent.

Eight of us stayed here for two nights during Glorious Goodwood week.
Run by the very hard working Nick and his wife, the Inn is off the beaten track in quiet surroundings.
En suite rooms very spacious and comfortable.
Both days we were asked what time we would like breakfast, which was nice, and each day it was excellent.
The first evening we had a bar snack, which was good. The second evening we had dinner, cooked by Nick, and everyone thought it extremely good, and excellent value.
Hopefully we will return in the future.
