“Great hotel, bad location”
Reviewed September 10, 2010

I came home last night after a week at the Selini Suites. I traveled by myself and went to Crete just to relax and read, so I didn't really require an exciting place but just a nice hotel, so I suppose the hotel met my needs. BUT... There are small, quiet villages and then there's Rapaniana. It's just a half empty street, really. There are some goats and 2-3 souvenir shops and a few empty restaurants, and that's it. There is a bus stop right across the street from the hotel, though, and the bus runs every half an hour. But still, it would be nice to at least stay in a village.
However, the dealbreaker for me was the beach. There's nothing there, just a lot of rocks/pebbles. So I had to take the bus to get to a beach as well.

But, that being said, the hotel in itself is very good. The food - ahh! I couldn't believe it the first time I walked into the restaurant and saw the amazing buffet. I looked forward to every meal, and most of the waitresses were really nice.

The service at the reception was good most of the time, but it really depended on who was there. Some were extremely friendly and smiling all the time while some looked like they couldn't care less about the guests.

The rooms are okay. At first, I got a room with a window to the trafficked street. It was really dark and gloomy, so I asked to change it. It took one day before they could actually give me an answer to whether or not I could change it, and two before I could move into the other room. But when I got there, it was much, much better. I had a sea view and the room was brighter. The bed was a bit hard and I didn't like the sheets but I'm sure the billion mosquito-bites and icky insect repellent played a part with my bad night sleep.

All in all, I had a pleasant stay, but I'll make sure to stay somewhere near a nicer beach the next time.

Having enjoyed a wonderful week at the Selini in early June 2009, we booked to return early July this year. Unfortunately, the haven we thought we had found proved to be a disappointment. First of all, the Selini now has an all inclusive package available and, therefore, this has meant families to 3 and 4 children which we prefer to avoid. The families, of al nationalities, found it necessary to rise at the crack of down to save sunbeds with towels, childrens' toys, and any other item accessible. The small pool area cannot accommodate the crowds of holidaymakers using the pool, and therefore, sunbeds were wall to wall, with lilos and toys blocking any access ways. It was noisy and crowded every day and resembled something out of the Benidorm programme on t.v. All in all, it has turned into a childrens' play area and the parents seem oblivious to the fact that some of us prefer peace and quiet. All of us who wanted some tranquility escaped to the beach, which in itself, is far from attractive, but quiet nevertheless.

The standard of cleaning in the Selini rooms has dropped considerably and this was a shock after the cleanliness for which we commended the owners last year. Perhaps we just had the bad luck to occupy a room serviced by one of their more lacklustre cleaners.

Although we still really like Kolymbari, it is obvious that things have deteriorated in the Selini and hence our decision to erase it from our list for the future.

I really enjoyed my stay at Selini Suits, Crete.
It is situated in a very quite and peaceful part of the island. Selini Suits is very nice, with a great stuff, and good food. The people that work there are nice. You feel yourself like in a family. Nice pool for taking some sun-bath or swimming.
Bus stop in front of the hotel in Chania, Rethymnon directions.
Very good holidays. I would definitelly come back there If I was going back to Crete :-)))

We travelled with Thompson on a package to the Selini Suites in Kolymbari. We couldn't fault the service of Thompson or the flight, but a little tricky with the leg room, if you are tall.
The transfer was around 40 minutes on an air conditioned coach.
The hotel was warm, friendly and welcoming. We were shown to our rooms, which were very clean and spaceous, as in most of Greece, the rooms are simple comfort not luxuriously furnished.
The linen was changed every day except Sunday, the room was also cleaned every day.

The room had everything you wanted for self catering, but we upgraded to breakfast, as it was only 5 euros per person. The breakfast was very good, tasty and ubundant, there was a good Greek feel to the breakfast and the service was first class.
The pool was very clean and plesant, but crowded, as most people opted to stay around the pool.
There is around a 20 minute walk into the village, which is pleasant, but the bins on the roadside ' wiff a bit ' and the local lads like to use the road as a dragstrip in the late evening ( good entertainment ).
There is a bus service from outside the hotel every hour, which takes 5 minutes to Kolymbari 1 euro and 35 minutes to Chania 2.40 euros the buses are all luxury air conditioned coaches and are very safe, most of the drivers and conducters speak good English, the buses are also quite punctual.
The majority of the resturants serve good quality food, but we settled for the seafront in Kolymbari as it was very realaxing.
Please be aware, there is not much to do in the line of entertainment in the hotel or the village, but there are bright lights and dancing in the next town or Chania.
We wanted a quiet, peaceful holiday and this fitted the bill perfectly.
We would recomend a trip to Ellefonnsi on the bus, very dramatic scenery on the way and a beautiful sandy beach and blue seas, but don't go on a Sunday, as half of Greece will be there and the que for the toilets will be long, weekdays are ok.
The whole area is beautiful, but typically rural Greece, the loacls are friendly and don't be intimidated if they come up to talk to you, it is a very friendly place.
We couldn't fault this holiday or hotel and look forward to going back.

I stayed at this hotel with my boyfriend and we we travelled with Thomson. For what we paid it was well worth the money and the hotel was lovely and clean and the staff there were very friendly and helpful. As a couple it was quite quiet but perfect for relaxing. It was a slight way out of Kolymbari and there wasnt much to do there as a town, but there were nice restaurants along the waterfront. We hired out bikes from the hotel to go down there for free. We loved our bikes towards the end!
There are a couple of restaurants which are walking distance (turning left if your leaving the hotel), a lovely one on the right hand side of the road, can't remember the name but it was great! There is the option of being all inclusive at the hotel so you can eat at the restaurant. We went self catered and ate there once with the food being your average hotel food, simple but tasty! Only drawback is that it finished at 9.
Buses are really frequent so even though you are a bit out the way you can get to Platanias or Chania really easily. Best to head towards Maleme and Platanias for the nice beaches, we rode to Maleme and it took about 25 mins but you can get a bus I think every half hour. The buses are air-conditioned and are more like coaches so sometimes its nice to hop on to keep cool.
Overall a lovely place, and seeing as its not really expensive you get what you pay for, and in our instance sometimes more.

Just returned from a two week stay in the selini suites in kolymbari. As all the other reviews the hotel is lovely, rooms are good, pool area perfect, the staff happy, smiley friendlyand helpful, rooms clean. The down side is probably the location as it is quite isolated. This hotel is perfect for people that just want to rest and relax and eat at the hotel or for people that love to walk for miles. As you come out of the hotel and turn to your right and walk a few minutes there are four little shops side by side, two tiny gift shops and two tiny supermarkets.Another half an hours walk will take you to kolymbari harbour with a handful of tavernas on the seafront not much else, not that we saw anyway.
As you come out of the hotel and turn left and cross the road, you pass one taverna that was closed whilst we were there, and continue to the corner there is another taverna, but if you turn the corner before that taverna there is esperides taverna, lovely food, friendly greek family. If you dont go in those continue down the main road another 5 minutes and you will come to another taverna. As the area is so quiet my husband and l were the only customers in the tavernas some nights...all night! There are two more tavernas further down just past the bp garage, one each side of the road and that is the extent of the facilities around the selini suites.
If you want more than that selini suites are not for you. There are bicycles you can use at the hotel and there is a bus stop with buses running every half hour(they stop at 10.30pm). The next resort along platanious is about 15 minutes by bus. This resort is far far busier, with so many tavernas and shops. If you like to try lots of different places to eat and like to shop this resort is probably the one for you.
We hired a car for four days so had the best of both worlds. Chania is about 40 minutes away by car with a lovely little harbour, with many tavernas and little shops in winding narrow little roads. Rethymnon is about an hour and a half away another little harbour with many tavernas,we visited a fort there that is being renovated it cost 4 euros entrance.
There are two waterparks on crete, one not far from selini suites about 25 minutes by car,l think 18euros entrance.Eating out for two with bread, starters and mains with litre of wine is 28 to 38 euros including gratuity. One tip dont order dessert....when you ask for the bill you are usually brought a free dessert with a glass(or small bottle)of the creten drink raki!! Strong...but it grows on you!!
We found the weather hot, sometimes cloudy and nearly always windy. It gets a little chilly most evenings.
The beach is a five minute walk from the hotel, its very pebbly. There is a taverna on the beach with sunbeds,if you eat there the sunbeds are free. They are a bit tatty but okay and the food in the taverna is very nice.
Back to the selini suites,it is a lovely hotel even though the location a bit quiet for us but okay. If you want to eat in the hotel in the evening it costs 15 euros each and if you pay cash on the night you get a free bottle of wine per couple. Or you can do all inclusive which costs 28 euros per day each.
If l were to make any criticism,it would be there is no information in your rooms to help you with the workings of the hotel and meal options and prices etc which would be so helpful. The other criticism there was no entertainment whatsoever. I think it starts 1st june if at all?
Overall a lovely relaxing holiday, with one day of rain in two weeks. We came home with lovely tans....hope you do to! Happy Holidays!!

The delay in writting this review does not reflect at all on the hotel it's just down to my lazyness.
This hotel is possibly the best place I've ever stayed taking everything into consideration. It's great value for money and was so clean. People were constantly cleaning!! The pool area although not the biggest was well appointed and a lovely place to relax.
We stayed on a B&B basis and found the breakfast buffet to be more than adequate with plenty of choice for everyone!
The beach close to the hotel is a pebble beach, which may not be great for families but is excellent for those looking for a quite area to chill out. If you're looking for a sandy beach, catch the bus to Platanias which is a bigger town not far from Kolymbari. This place has a large sandy beach but go early to get the best spot as is does get very busy.
There are many restaurants in the town of Kolymbari. Some close to the hotel and others a bit further away (but still within walking distance) on the seafront.
The local buses are comfortable and air conditioned and what's even better is that there's a bus stop right outside the hotel. Ask one of the helpfull staff at the hotel and they'll give you a timetable. The buses aren't always on time mind but they do turn up sooner or later.
The hotel also rents out bikes for free (you have to leave a deposit but obviously you get this back). So if you fancy a bike ride just slap on plenty of factor 50 and get going. We cycled to platanias which was a lovely way to see a bit more of the island.
