“Lucky find”
Reviewed May 6, 2012

We stayed at Omau a fortnight ago and have nothing but praise for it. The units were well-designed and finished and almost new. After a succession of past-their-best motels and a weird B&B this place was a refreshing surprise. The little cove a short walk away was magical at sunset and we were shown the way by a friendly border collie. It is on the road but quiet and in a beautiful setting.
A bonus was the Star Tavern across the way, despite the unprepossessing exterior it was a great place to eat and drink. Incredibly friendly and wecoming and full of families and chatty locals.

Thank you to Grace for such a kind welcome, great room, comfortable bed and really powerful shower. I wish I could have stayed longer. I'd really recommend the Bay House Cafe for dinner too - delicious and a great wine selection.

My Husband son and myself come every year and find it just spectacular every year. It is such an amazing place with the local pub and beautiful beach. It was a shame to see the Bay house had changed hands and was closed but are very excited to see a new and improved one opening in a few weeks, we cant wait to come back and try it out. The hosts were such great and friendly people, were so good at lokking after our and our son's needs. I would reccomend this place as a once in a life time stay in nz.

Cape Foulwind is an absolutely beautiful spot to visit, and the motel is situated close by. We had a comfortable stay. The room was a bit small for us, but we had an extra bed for our daughter, which took up the extra space. A few bugs in the room, bug spray would have been nice. We only had a short stay, but it was comfortable.

Continental breakfast is included - tinned fruit, cereal and bread. Was ok to get us going early the next morning.

You can use the kitchen at night if you want to cook a meal, so it can be handy for families.

We stayed here for one night recently. As we were travelling in a small group we booked two of their studio units next to each other. The location is easy to find and the views are fantastic. Owner is welcoming and happy to talk about what is available in the area and to recommend the pub next door for dinner and drinks. Rooms are spotlessly clean and very comfortable and the bathrooms are very clean and the shower is great. There is a kitchenette in each room that is well equipped and easy to use. The beds are comfortable. There is heating that works very well and on the windy blustery day we were there was very welcome. Breakfast is simple and filling and served in the dining room and this was included in the charge for the night. Only regret that we had only time to stay one night, would have happily stayed for another. Highly recommend this place and will be back again.

Room Tip: There is a disabled access unit if needed. Also a front and back door which helps it to not feel th...

Oh how I wish I had never stayed here! The motel is right on a road - to and from a cement works. No shielding from the road either, so you cannot leave some curtains open. The small, sea view is over the next door neighbor's drive away, and between some trees. The nearest access to the beach is a good kilometer down the road. One of the 2 nights we stayed a neighboring house played such loud music for at least 18 hours straight (through the night) that it kept us awake. The owners did not seem to care, did nothing about it, made me feel that I was making an undue fuss when I asked about it, and offered no apology for it. This sums ups the 'hosts' - the worst I have come across. The pub they recommended across the road, for good fish, offered food little better than that of a greasy chip shop.

Karen H, Owner at Omau Settlers Lodge, responded to this review, December 13, 2016
As the new owners of Omau Settlers Lodge (since April 2016), we appreciate this feedback and are considering the issues you have raised. To assist potential guests, we have created a short video of the lodge and immediate surrounds, so they can see what our facilities are like and what is available at the Cape. It is disappointing to here that your experience at Omau Settlers Lodge was not to your satisfaction, but with the recent closure of the nearby Holcim Cement works, traffic noise has reduced considerably; and we do hope that you will consider staying with us again in future. Kind regards, Karen & Lee

Although a few kilometres 'out of town' it is in a wonderful scenic area, a few minutes walk from the wild west coast. Room was good, if a little small, but you don't spend much time there really. First class continental breakfast included. With family in Westport, will stay here again.
