Description: Housed in the distinctive Art Deco ‘Waterside Workers Union Hall’ The Town House (formally The Bay House) is a ‘must do’ on your coastal itinerary. Reminiscent of a European café The Town House is the ‘go to’ place whatever you’re dining needs, whether it be a meal at anytime during the day or evening, a coffee and croissant in the morning, an afternoon wine or cocktail or a late evening drink and dessert. This is the place where you will find the locals sipping espresso at the bar on a Saturday morning reading the paper while others dine in the restaurant and enjoy the a la carte menu on offer. Located towards the port end of town near the picturesque fishing wharf on the corner of Palmerston and Cobden Streets, The Town House’ cosy interior is in keeping with its art deco history featuring original wooden floors, be-spoke wallpaper and wood paneled walls throughout with a deco sunburst theme behind the bar, the freestanding fireplace and in the original art deco glass and rimu doors that lead to the north facing terrace. The dining room is cosy despite its open design and high ceilings. The room warms up as it fills up with diners and comes alive with the enjoyable buzz of dinner conversations and as the warm weather comes to an end a spot by the fireplace is desirable and will see you settle in for a very comfortable dining experience. The Terrace has seating for 40 diners and on a sunny day is the best spot in town for alfresco wining and dining.

“A gem in Westport”
Reviewed August 17, 2014

We were travelling up the west Coast and had hoped to try the cafe at Tauranga Bay (Cape Foulwind). Unfortunately it was closed, but the phone number took us to a restaurant in Westport (10 minutes away) owned by the same lady. it is at the end of the main street and well sign-posted so easy to find. The building was apparently an old trade union hall and has been refurbished with sensitivity, and looks great. The menu was good, and the service was excellent. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the food and had all the answers to our questions about the restaurant and ownership etc. We shared a starter of japanese dumplings which were delicious. Three of us had the fish of the day (Turbot on risotto) and one had the fish cakes. All the meals were delicious and beautifully cooked and presented. Our waitress had told us the owner/chef was not there that day. However the assistant chef was excellent. She even served a couple of meals to diners when the waitresses were tied up in the bar so her food was served hot and fresh! This was a real find in a small town and worth a special visit for foodies like us. They do a Fish & Chips Friday which is popular with locals evidently. We were there on Friday and saw the fish & chips which looked superb.

“What a lovely suprise.”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

The food that we chose was equal to that served anywhere. For the main we had both had Wild West Coast Venison, served with a cherry and red wine jus, fried potato slices, blue cheese and toasted walnuts. Yes it sounds simple but what a wonderful match!
If you go there be sure to have it. You will not be disappointed.

“Good all round”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

I went for the first time to the Town House simply because it was close by to where I was staying. I was pleasantly suprised by how lovely they had re-furbished this old building. The decor is stylish and the food match's. A beautiful place for a special occaision or just a casual lunch/dinner. I would definately recommend and definately return.

“A wonderful surprise!”
Reviewed May 22, 2014

We were only passing by this little town to find some lunch and we stumbled upon this restaurant/bar. This place is definitely classy with great atmosphere. The food was excellent without the hefty price tag. With mains ranging from 15 to 30 dollars, it's definitely worth every dollar. We had great service as well!

Definitely will come here to eat again! Props to the chef (who's also the owner I believe)

“Very good, but could be better.”
Reviewed May 17, 2014

We were in Westport on the night of our 10th Wedding Anniversary (travelling south island in motorhome), so we booked the table a few months ahead of our trip. On arriving in Westport, we went to have a look at the venue and menu. Only one fish dish on the menu, but the staff couldn't tell us what that was, as it hadn't been delivered yet - fine no problem, it's going to be fresh, I can find out later. The staff congratulated us on our anniversary which I thought was very good that they had made a point of noting this fact. We returned later that evening and had a pre-dinner drink in the bar. The waitress took our order and then delivered us our starters to the bar (not what we had booked) and without cutlery, a particular pet hate of mine! We asked to be moved to the restaurant and she duly obliged. The food was good, very good, but not one fish or vegetarian option on the menu and no side orders of vegetables available either. The service was slow, mainly because there was only one waitress for a fairly busy evening. I would go back, but would like to see more staff on the floor and some fish on the menu.
