We were travelling up the west Coast and had hoped to try the cafe at Tauranga Bay (Cape Foulwind). Unfortunately it was closed, but the phone number took us to a restaurant in Westport (10 minutes away) owned by the same lady. it is at the end of the main street and well sign-posted so easy to find. The building was apparently an old trade union hall and has been refurbished with sensitivity, and looks great. The menu was good, and the service was excellent. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the food and had all the answers to our questions about the restaurant and ownership etc. We shared a starter of japanese dumplings which were delicious. Three of us had the fish of the day (Turbot on risotto) and one had the fish cakes. All the meals were delicious and beautifully cooked and presented. Our waitress had told us the owner/chef was not there that day. However the assistant chef was excellent. She even served a couple of meals to diners when the waitresses were tied up in the bar so her food was served hot and fresh! This was a real find in a small town and worth a special visit for foodies like us. They do a Fish & Chips Friday which is popular with locals evidently. We were there on Friday and saw the fish & chips which looked superb.
