Description: Housed in the distinctive Art Deco ‘Waterside Workers Union Hall’ The Town House (formally The Bay House) is a ‘must do’ on your coastal itinerary. Reminiscent of a European café The Town House is the ‘go to’ place whatever you’re dining needs, whether it be a meal at anytime during the day or evening, a coffee and croissant in the morning, an afternoon wine or cocktail or a late evening drink and dessert. This is the place where you will find the locals sipping espresso at the bar on a Saturday morning reading the paper while others dine in the restaurant and enjoy the a la carte menu on offer. Located towards the port end of town near the picturesque fishing wharf on the corner of Palmerston and Cobden Streets, The Town House’ cosy interior is in keeping with its art deco history featuring original wooden floors, be-spoke wallpaper and wood paneled walls throughout with a deco sunburst theme behind the bar, the freestanding fireplace and in the original art deco glass and rimu doors that lead to the north facing terrace. The dining room is cosy despite its open design and high ceilings. The room warms up as it fills up with diners and comes alive with the enjoyable buzz of dinner conversations and as the warm weather comes to an end a spot by the fireplace is desirable and will see you settle in for a very comfortable dining experience. The Terrace has seating for 40 diners and on a sunny day is the best spot in town for alfresco wining and dining.

“What a find!”
Reviewed March 14, 2014 via mobile

My husband and I stayed at Westport for a night and came across this wonderful wine bar and restaurant. It is quite a delight in the town.

The service was friendly and helpful. And the food was five star quality. Beautifully presented meals which were very flavoursome; we had the clam entree and the chicken and lamb for mains. The wine, beer and cocktail list was extensive.

Well worth the walk from the other end of town. Highly recommended.

Thank Fiona B

“Lovely ambience in art deco building”
Reviewed February 4, 2014

My husband had a great lunch - fish cakes. I chose the Town House breakfast which was awful. Probably if you like greasy meat, it's not so awful so it was just a bad choice by me. Coffee was excellent. Service very good. Free internet

“A Gem in Westport”
Reviewed January 30, 2014

Westport on the west coast of the South Island is the last major settlement - decent size population, two supermarkets - before the road finally calls it a halt, a 100-plus kms to the north where the Heaphy Track (a four-day walk) begins. Maybe, then, not quite the place you'd expect to experience food that matches the dripping superlatives too frequently used to describe it.
Well, you'd be wrong! The Town House on Palmerston Street is in the alpha-plus category, at least judging by the experience three of us enjoyed very recently. Service was provided professionally and cheerily - yes, the music could be sotto voce for those who like to hear their companions' words, and presumably it could be turned up for those hell-bent on achieving deafness in middle-age - whilst the dish we opted for (Harrisa Lamb) could easily qualify as the flagship for The Townhouse. The chef (a woman who clearly knows a lot more than a thing or two about food) was kept busy on the night we visited, since the word has perhaps spread that this is "the place to eat."
Our advice is "try it…" It's not the very cheapest food in town, but nor does it break the bank.

“Good Quality Meal”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

Finding something open late (8:00 pm!) on New Year's Day was a challenge so we were glad to come across The Town House. Staff were friendly and efficient and the menu had a good selection of dishes. Meals arrived promptly and were very good. Probably some of the best venison I have eaten.
