Nice place and the food was pretty good. Service was a bit slow the night we were there but we enjoyed ourselves.

After spending two weeks traveling throughout New Zealand on vacation and encountering mostly stuffy, arrogant, and downright rude behavior from the majority of Kiwis we interacted with, it was truly refreshing to happen upon this restaurant. The staff made us immediately feel welcome and seemed eager and happy to make our dining experience pleasurable. Shockingly (not really) they weren't Kiwis. The food was quite good and attractively presented. The portions could have been a little bigger, but they certainly weren't small. Price was quite reasonable.
Overall, this meal is one of the highlights of our trip.
Just to be clear, we did encounter some genuinely warm and friendly Kiwis as well, but quite frankly, they were the exception rather than the rule. I've traveled all over the globe for years and never encountered such a uniformly poor example of hospitality. New Zealand is a lovely country and well worth visiting, but the locals really need to take a long hard look in the mirror I think.

Excellent service, good music and a good menu at this traditional pub/restaurant on the high street (furthest from the lake).
Ate there twice in the three nights we visited

We visited with our extended family. Teenagers, Mum and Dad and grandparents. Their was one waitress and one cook. The waitress got our drinks order messed up. They had no spag bolognaise. When I asked how the potatoes were cooked I was advised "yes they are cooked". And when I asked what vegetables they had with the meal I was advised "yes, they are cooked too". Can't imagine raw potato and they weren't new like she said. They were actually microwaved lukewarm from previous day. We were nervous when we heard the microwave continually dinging. Microwave food from a restaurant! Our meals came out at different times. Two of our party had finished by the time the last meals came out. The lamb shank had been microwaved too long - it was like cardboard on one side. Very stringy and dry. The chips were disgusting - total fat - there was no potato left in them. We suspect they were left over from night before and reheated. There are heaps of eating options in Te anau. Don't go here.

the place itself is already fun to go, it really looks like a genuine western cowboy place. The food is excellent, look for their days special
