Persons planning Fiordland attraction visits should definitely consider Te Anau as their departure base. Lakeside Te Anau is itself quite scenic, just commercial enough to be serviceable, and hours closer to Milford Sound (road round-trip) than Queenstown. For my wife and I Keiko's Cottages B&B was an ideal place to stay. It is in a quiet neighborhood, about ten minutes walk from the commercial center, surrounded by Keiko's lovely gardens. We lodged in the back cottage, which I believe may be the smallest -- with a kitchenette and sitting area it was cozy but sufficiently large for us. Kevin and Keiko are delightful. This was a no-car holiday for us, and Kevin graciously transported us from and to the bus and drove us to a beginning point for a pleasant hike. He arranged our Milford Sound booking and offered many other suitable suggestions for activities in the area. The breakfasts were ample and well-prepared, including jam from Keiko's garden fruit. As a surprise bonus (we are casual birders), a long-tailed cuckoo posed on a railing just outside the breakfast room window on the morning of our departure.
