“Gr8 spot”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2010

Found this spot by accident, but was impressed. They claimed to be closest to the lake at TeAnau, and they were.
We had lovely rooms facing the lake, and had afternoon drinks on the lawn out the front of our rooms. Very pleasent.
While on the main road into Te Anau, we were not disturbed. Walking distance to the town and eateries.
Well positioned to visit Milford Sound and well signposted to get there.
Only downside was the main bedroom was a bit small and stuffy, all other ammenaties were excellent, good kitchen and bathroom

When i arrived i thought this was one of the most beautiful motels. The large sliding doors opens up to a lovely garden with picnic tables, its facing the lake so you get lovely views throughout the day. It is also walking distance to the main street where you fing supermarkets and restaurants. Living area was spacious. I really did not like the bathroom though. The toilet area was separate from the shower area, and had no washbasin. So after using the toilet, you had to exit, and then enter the bathroom to wash your hands (provided no one else was inside!) Also, the water pressure was low and the temperature of the water in the shower was difficult to adjust. It was either too cold or too hot> Just one notch brought it from cold to too hot. So every shower we had to decide between being cold, or almost scalding. That was not nice at all. This was the real peeve for this motel. I also got charged for calling an 800 number which was supposed to be free i thought. Other than that, it is really a pretty place.

Late reviews. First off, this is a motel and we've never stayed in one before trip to NZ. The staff were great, the location even better, the unit (a one bed/living/bath) was roomy but could do with a refurb, one gripe was the additional single bed in our room (perhaps a triple room on another day) which took up space. Outside, the gardens were beautiful and was extremely clean. Location was fab, Te Anau just across the road the bustling town is a bit further up which has everything you need.

We stayed at the Lakeside Motel on 29th and 30th Jan.
No lake view apartments were available, but from other reviews I think maybe they are smaller. We had a lovely big 1 bedroom unit with a large lounge area which also had a big day bed for lounging on, as well as a sofa. There was a well equipped kitchen area and small dining table too, PLUS a big bathroom with spa bath. Everything was spotless. The lounge had a quiet patio area at the back. The grounds were also immaculately kept, wish my garden looked like this. Its an easy walk into town too.
All this for $120NZ a night. Definitely one of our best stops.

The Lakeside Lodge is slightly away from the main town centre but within walking distance. If you are going to one of the supermarkets you will probably need to take the car though. The view from our upstairs apartment was great, especially as the sun set. The Lodge has really nice front gardens with picnic tables and you can BBQ here if you wish. Unfortunately the welcome was of the key and cow variety with no effort even to tell me where the room was situated until I asked. The person on reception was walking backwards through a connecting door as I asked this and some other basic questions. The accommodation is clean, comfortable but lacks any extra. If you read other posts on places like Central Gold (Cromwell), Centre Point on Columbo (Christchurch), The Palazzo (Nelson) and Taylor's (Ashburton) you will see what I mean by extra. I wouldn't rule out staying here again as there is nothing basically wrong with the place, just a feeling that they see you as "a temporary resident unit", but I would have a look at other motels, maybe a little bit closer to the shopping area.

Te Anau is on the road to Milford Sound and we didn't really expect much more than a place to stay. What a pleasant surprise. Te Anau has a really nice feel to it. Visit the cinema and see the Fjordland Experience - Shadowland, while sitting back in the most comfortable cinema seats I have experienced while slurping a glass of wine. For longer features you can even order a cheese board to go with your wine. If you are using Te Anau as a base to visit Milford Sound, fill up with fuel before you depart. There is no fuel after this point and you will need enough to get back (around 4 1/2 hours driving in total).

we stayed two nights before our overnight on Douptful sound and the lake view was lovely. Te Anau had lots to offer - larger than some stops and good for access to the sounds - the drive to Milford is spectacular. The apartment was fine.

I probably would rate this motel a 3.5 if I could. It was very cheap and fine to stay in, but there wasn't anything special about it.

The room was a little cold, and you had to keep re-pushing a button to get the heater to run. The amenities were basic, but it did have a full kitchen which was convenient. It has a nice view over the lake, but was a little too far from the main street to walk to.

No real comments on the staff as we only saw them to check in and out. The price couldn't be beat and was probably our best value of the trip.
