Owner description: Visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves - an underground network of limestone caves lit by hundreds of glowworms. In the darkness they produce a glittering display. Carved out by the force of the river, the underground world is surprisingly beautiful with whirlpools and roaring waterfalls. Begin with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau and then our nature guides will take you in groups through the caves and then in a small boat into the grotto. Departs Te Anau.

“What an experience”

Really well organised by Real Journeys. A quick boat trip across the lakre then divided into small groups to visit the caves (size of the group limited by the size of the boat you ride on inside the caves). So you enter the cave, bent almost double in parts where the ceiling is low, surrounded by the roar of the river in the cave. Then you get on the boat which the guide moves along in complete darkness by hauling on a fixed rope and the ceiling glow with a myriad glow worms. Magic.

“FIND OUT HOW THEY DO IT!”
Reviewed March 8, 2014

The Glow-worm trip involves a boat ride across the lake, presentations about the life-cycle of a glow-worm and a visit to the cave. The presentations are highly informative. The caves are worth a visit in their own right with the glow-worms as an added bonus: commentary inside the cave is hard to hear due to the background noise of rushing water. The head clearance at the entrance seems unduly low and restrictive: take full note of the advice to keep your head down. The climax of the visit is a ride on a flat-bottomed boat in part of the cave where the flow has been dammed to create a lake: large numbers of glow-worms provide the only light – and this is little more than pin-pricks in the dark. So it’s not a place for those who might fear almost total darkness.

“Surprisingly interesting creatures”
Reviewed March 7, 2014

There's a pleasant boat trip to the caves and then a short walk. Inside, you need to bend low for about 15 metres before more space becomes available. You then walk for a while, with a guide, before a boat trip where you see the bright lights. The guides were very informative about the fascinating life of the glow-worms. We greatly enjoyed the trip but I would caution anyone who is claustrophobic or is unnerved by total darkness against it for obvious reasons.

“Fabulous experience”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

We loved the Glow Worm Caves - advertising for this experience did not match the grandeur of what we experienced. The commentary on the boat ride and during the cave experience was very informative. Glow worms were beautiful and walking above underground waterfalls was the best experience.
