Owner description: Visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves - an underground network of limestone caves lit by hundreds of glowworms. In the darkness they produce a glittering display. Carved out by the force of the river, the underground world is surprisingly beautiful with whirlpools and roaring waterfalls. Begin with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau and then our nature guides will take you in groups through the caves and then in a small boat into the grotto. Departs Te Anau.

Did this trip with Real Journeys, a very slick and efficient operation, starting with the boat trip across the lake. Theres a well equipped information centre at the caves, and knowedgeable guide to lead the tour. Would have liked more time to take in the unique beauty of the caves, it was a all a bit rushed, trying to push 3 groups of people through at the same time, and they really should ask if you want your picture taken at the start, which they then offer you to buy, rather than just do it. A cup of tea was available along with a slide show on the glow worms, but the guides offered conflicting technical information on the habits of the glow worms, so they need to tell visitors the correct story.Overall an enjoyable activity that enhances the whole Fiordland experience.

Stunning boat trip across the lake at sunset and then such a lovely experience having the guided walk into the caves, and then getting into a boat in the darkness and floating around to see thousuands of tiny glows in the ceiling of the cave! Followed by another boat trip back to Te Anau across the lake when the sky was streaked with magical sunset colours (we did the 8.30pm tour in February).

As long as you can walk and duck your head, this is good value as it combines a fabulous boat trip across the lake with this underground wonderland. The guides are young, enthusiastic and switched on to everyone's care

The boat trip from Te Anau was scenic and the cave experience like nothing we had previously experienced. We were given plenty of information about GlowWorms. An excellent trip!

This was our first exposure to a glowworm cave so you won't have to suffer through comparisons to other caves. Real Journeys operates the boat and the attraction and they do their typical excellent job. We were in no rush to be the first into the cave so we watched the presentations in the Cavern House - actually a good choice because by the time you see the caves and the glowworms (of which there are plenty) you'll have an idea of what it is you are looking at.

Our tour was led by Chris (apparently 80% of the people in New Zealand are named either Chris or Ian) and he did a great job - information, professional, welcoming and entertaining. That's a tough set of skills to have day-after-day so, good job, Chris! Note: the next day we took the Milford Track Day Walk and, surprise!, Chris was working on the boat. Probably helps to keep the enthusiasm level up.

Our recommendation: Take the tour, take your time and enjoy yourself.
