Owner description: Visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves - an underground network of limestone caves lit by hundreds of glowworms. In the darkness they produce a glittering display. Carved out by the force of the river, the underground world is surprisingly beautiful with whirlpools and roaring waterfalls. Begin with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau and then our nature guides will take you in groups through the caves and then in a small boat into the grotto. Departs Te Anau.

“Most unusual and a real delight”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

A very slickly and well organised tour, starting off with a boat trip in a large modern cruiser to the landing pier close to the caves. The initial trip takes around a half hour across Lake Te Anau and then disembark for the caves.

GIVE YOURSELVES A GOOD COATING OF DEET (anti mosquito liquid) as there are clouds of Sand Flies at the entry to the caves.

Although it is a real "duck down" to get into the first section of the caves, I can safely say that the fantastic walkway and lighting system will give you a superb view of the massive flow of underground waters crashing down through the layers of sandstone into the underground rivers where, almost incidentally, there are delightful displays of the glow worms gently winking from the ceiling.

A most unusual but "fun and educational" trip that is really worth your time.

The star like quality and it was just as beautiful as when I first saw it 49 years ago. The tour was enhanced by the beautiful singing of our guide.

“Magical”
Reviewed December 8, 2012

A very well organised trip. It started initially with a boat cruise across the lake to the actual caves. Then the group was separated into smaller parties of around 10 each with a guide. Ducking into the entrance we followed the guide's torch into the darkness, alongside streams and waterfalls. Then we boarded a small boat which was on a pulley. We were asked to remain silent and the torch was extinguished as we drifted further into the cave where the glow worms abounded like little stars attached to the roof and sides of the cave. It was brilliant, all that you could hear was the roaring of the water in the pitch dark broken by sparks of light all around from the worms. After the caves there was a cup of tea and a short talk about the life history of glow worm before the return cruise.

“Went with real journeys, and was kind of expecting a corny experience. Turned out to be one of the treasured excursions.”

don't miss this, it's fun, educational, and exciting! The tour guide was clear, the number was small 10 people, and the video after was informative.

“Surreal”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

Even on a miserable day this was a great activity, as you're largely inside. The entrance to the cave is only 1 metre high, so as long as you don't have a problem bending down, all is good. The boat in the pitch black is the highlight. We got so close to so many of the glow worms that they lit up our faces! It was also great to learn more about the life cycle of these magical creatures :) Great for young and old!
