We decided it was worth paying a little more for a lake view, and we weren't disappointed. Campbell's units are huge, well-appointed, comfortable and freshly-renovated; in fact on-going renovations had us bumped upstairs to a better view, which mostly compensated for the smell of paint. When I complained the young fellow was prompt to find some vanilla which I suggested may help.
Being winter we'd decided against cheaper accommodation options in favour of certain warmth and comfort, and the bonus of the lakeside situation was hugely enjoyed despite it being too cold to avail ourselves of the lovely balcony except to take photographs. The comfortable recliners in the loungeroom are better than many places offer and there was ample heating and a good shower.
Te Anau proved to be one of our very favourite places, and we would happily recommend Campbell's on the Lake as a very comfortable home away from home.

Rooms are nice and it has great potential, but just did not make the grade. Staff were only just helpful. Heating broke down and could not be fixed. Bathrooms are a bit dodgy. Bright exterior lights cannot be prevented from shining into bedroom. Clockradio was disfunctional. They are trying hard but once they have finished the renovations it might be worth another try. There were lots of options along the Lake when I was there and I don't think I chose well.

Had stayed here on a previous trip to Te Anau 5 years ago, rooms then very comfortable, but dated. New owners now, I think, who are renovating, probably finished by now. We and our friendsboth had a top floor apartment, newly renovated. Very nice, clean and comfortable.Living room has new furniture including 2 very comfortable reclining chairs, An outside luggage lift is now installed so you dont have to drag your suitcases up a flight of stairs!
Experienced a small earth tremor while we were there of 4.7. Building shook slightly, but nothing to worry about, and no damage at all.

Campbell's is right on the lake and very close to town. You would not believe the size of these rooms. Decor is outdated, but extremely clean and very comfortable. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

After travelling from the top of the North Island and spending no more than one or two nights in accommodation we decided to settle at Te Anau rather than Queenstown for 3 nights. Accommodation was hard to find and we had learnt to book ahead when we arrived in Christchurch. The view from our balcony was lovely - a beautiful lake with sunsets and sunrises that were awesome. The rooms however were outdated - yes a little like my grandmother too! Very little bench space and minimal cooking/kitchen facilities. We wanted self contained so we would relax, cook at home and take in the ambience of the lake. A microwave and 2 hotplates, no dishwasher (not what we would call luxury apartments). Further, and we take note from a previous review re fish smells, in the compendium were notes guests cooking and that fish, curry and chilli should not be cooked and that guests could be fined for doing so. Mmmmm...made us worry about pasta smells and toast. This accommodation was the dearest of all our stops in 15 days and at $210 a night, think is over priced? The bedroom was great as was the bed - but why would you have a partly partioned bedroom where the light streams in? Like most of the hotels/motels/apartment in New Zealand that we stayed with there was no air conditioning? Seemed to be a common theme? In this particular case however, leaving a window open was not a major problem as there was no traffic noise, although building work did start rather early. Would probably recommend but would check prices against other motels/hotels. Definitely paying for the view.
