“A Gem in Te Anau”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2007

I booked this place solely because of excellent reviews here. The lodge is right across from Lake Te Anau. Within walking distance to the city center. Each unit is like apartment unit. Ours was the last unit (#15) on the second floor which we thought was the best one. Kitchen was spotless and complete with all cooking utensils. They had dishwasher detergent for you to clean your dishes just in case you cook or use their coffee mugs. The bedroom was a bit outdated. Bathroom was old too but clean. Laundry room in the back is free to use afte 11 a.m. They even provide you with laundry detergent. The only thng that I wished would be different is having ironing table and iron inside each unit, not in the laundry room. So, we can iron our clothes at our own time.

Also, the girl in the reception was not very informative about booking us some tours. For instance, a guided walk for Mildford tracking. She only mentioned about one company which employs one of her friends. That happened to be fully booked. Good thing we saw a brochure of another company that offered the same thing but she said that she never dealt with them before in the past. So, we went and did the tracking. Awesome.

Also, lunch with Mildford cruise. She did not tell us that the cruise also sold sandwiches and other snacks that did not need to be pre-ordered. About NZ$7 for a sandwich and around NZ$3 for a cookie or a slice of cake, etc. The pre-ordered lunch cost us NZ$29 per person (about US$21). Expensive for a sandwich and fruits. Good thing we got the bento lunch but still it did not worth that much.

Free high speed internet. Just ask to borrow an internet cable. They only asked for NZ$10 refundable deposit.

Overall, I say it is one of the best lodge in Te Anau especially with unbeatable lake view.

First the good parts - great view and location, friendly front desk, spacious room

But we weren't very happy with the stay. The warming was inadequate. The rooms have an old feel. Dunno how to put my finger on it, and we didn't see other properties in Te Anau to compare, but we wouldn't recommend the place.

Perhaps it is a good place to stay if you don't expect to be in the room for long and are sightseeing most of the time, or are staying overnight after Milford Sound. But when we were there the cold weather made us stay indoors, and the experience was nothing great.

Booked this on basis of previous TripAdvisor reviews and we were not disappointed. Superb views, rooms updated recently, very very spacious - unbelievably so, excellent value. Large lounge, dining area - also balcony overlooking the lake and the glorious sunsets on an evening - absoulte heaven - wish we were back there. Stayed 3 nights - did Milford & Doubtful Sounds - ideal from Te Anau - with Real Journeys company - book online and save 20% - very professional outfir and super days. Te Anau is a greta place to stay and Campbell Lodge would be our recommendation. Pictures are the views from the balcony.

Thank you for your great review, Traveljet.
We have taken on board Traveljet's comments about the furnishing fabrics, and will be looking for something more modern for our next upgrade.
Unfortunately economics dictates that having made a choice of fabric, good or bad, we are stuck with it for a few years. I conceed, though, that the green was not a great choice.

My comments are based on what I expect from an accommodation, according to the rates they charge.

Barry checked us in and it was good to put a face to”vbc” indeed. We were also quite tickled at the little “lift” for the big luggages – great idea! Our 2 apartments on the upper level gave us great views of the lake. Although there were some other motels along the same street, we personally felt that Campbells offered the best view. The view and the spaciousness of the apartment are the strong points of this accomodation.

The bedroom was quite large with a super kingsize bed. It’s situated nearer to the entrance of the apartment. You still get your privacy but don’t expect any view from the bedroom though. The lovely view is more from the living room/kitchenette and of course balcony.

The whole apartment was spotless and clean, including the nice bathroom and separate little toilet. Heating was adequate and the electric blankets most welcome during the temperatures of 10-15 degrees during our stay.

As for the comments on outdated furnishings. It’s not that things are falling apart. I would be more concerned if it was old with mould in the bathroom or dust & musty smells in the apartment but nope, everything was WELL MAINTAINED, CLEAN and GREAT value for our rate of NZ140. You seldom get an apartment of this size in a touristy area at this rate.

To be fair to those who thought it was a little dated after reading so many rave reviews - I think it’s more a choice of fabrics or colour for the armchair/curtains eg. The velvety dark green material and patterns for the armchair contributed to the dated look – if they chose something smarter, it would make a big difference. Some well coordinated interior décor ideas would give it a cozier touch. So this is the only teensy weensy improvement they could look into. But for NZ140 during our stay, this is really just too small a point to fuss about. There was so much more to appreciate about this accommodation.

Te Anau is such a great base for the Sounds and we would most definitely stay at Campbells without a doubt. During check in, Barry gave us a printed sheet showing all the necessary amenities around the area. The walk to the main street with the eateries & Real Journey's office, was a convenient & pleasant 7 min stroll.

We had most of our meals at The Ranch (further in the eatery street). The town is rather quiet, so it was a nice change to be in a little pub-like atmosphere which was quite lively without being boisterous. I am must say the baked apple pie was really yummy! The food portions were huge (by asian standards) and food quality definitely good enough for us during our stay.

We also enjoyed the pies at the little outlet near the start of the eatery street (sorry forgot the name of the street). They have simple raisin toast with coffee/tea and that was sufficient for breakfast on 2 mornings esp before the early start to Doubtful Sound The outlet opens earlier than some of the other eateries in Spring, so we even took away the nice hot pies for lunch during the cruise. Our favorite coffee however was at Fiordland Bakery (further in) where they also served cooked breakfast.

It’s an easy stroll to the 2 supermarkets (the larger one is further in) and also to the Cinema where we viewed “The Shadowland”.

This “movie” has got beautiful scenes of Fiordland taken by the helicopter pilot. He actually built this cinema so people who didn’t have the means to take the flights could view the movie instead. The little theatre is very cozy and clean. Just one tip, try to watch the movie when you aren’t feeling sleepy or tired esp after a heavy meal. The scenes and shots are very beautiful and well done. However the music accompanying the scenes could have been more interesting (being a musician myself, that’s my personal opinion) esp when there is no dialogue throughout.

We enjoyed our stay at Te Anau (a nice quiet base to just unwind for a while) and would return to Campbells without a doubt.

Campbell was spacious and clean. We had an amazing view of the lake from our balcony. You really cannot go wrong with hotels in Te Anau, but this was the best of the bunch. The space and laundry facilities were much appreciated after camping for so long. I highly recommend this place!

Our expectations were very high after reading other travellers reviews but on arrival we were somewhat disappointed. The position of the motel is great with beautiful views of the lake and the mountains, it is also very close to the main street with shops and restaurants. Our very large apartment was on the upper level and had a balcony, it was also very clean but somehow old fashioned and not very homely or welcoming but then again well equipped. The staff were very friendly and rooms were serviced promptly. For Te Anau price was quite reasonable, NZ$160 per night.

We stayed here for 1 night enroute to the Milford Sound and wish we could have stayed longer. We had an upper level apartment which was very spacious and had great views over the lake. 5 minutes walk to the main street. Staff were helpful and friendly. Would definitely stay here if we ever have the fortune to pass through Te Anau again.
