“Nice and Different”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

NZ wasn't, in our experience, a great place for more exotic food (specialities of pies and fish & chips about sums it up) so it was nice to come across this place which gives a sort of tapas theme to interesting local food.
The ambience was very nice and the wine was good and reasonable value too.
All in all it was an excellent alternative to the more predictable offerings of Te Anau.

“Good local dining”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

Using local foods with a tapas theme was great for variety. A little too much fried but the taste was clean and enjoyable. Nice casual ambiance.

“a Southland spin on tapas”
Reviewed March 9, 2013

Mercado is a small restaurant offering a variety of tapas dishes, most of which offer a distinctively New Zealand approach attractively presented.

The spiced fried potatoes and pulled pork mini-burgers were the highlights. A couple of other dishes seemed over-priced.

“An innovative surprise”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

The restaurant is billed as a Tapas restaurant and has a Spanish sounding name so we walked past it a couple of times. The third time the chef was outside offering a couple of tasting items and we stopped to try and then read the menu.
Tapas style but an innovative selection of food options with a New Zealand flavour, not at all the run of the mill tapas items. Very good execution and prompt friendly service.
A good, reasonably priced wine-list.

“Great food and presentation”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

My favorite was the seafood chowder - a tastey and clean palate, coked brilliantly without any glugginess usually found with chowders and a generous serve. As a tappas restaurant, some of the dishes were too expensive.
