“very special stay”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

As I write this, there are two reviews in the 'terrible' category which were written a couple of years ago. All I can say is that there was NOTHING terrible about our stay here in January 2013, and if there WERE any shortcomings back then, they've all been well and truly rectified now. All of the staff here were really helpful and friendly. Of particular note, Monique, the restaurant manager, saved us a lot of time and trouble by advising us of additional info about the overnight boat trip that we were to take at Milford sound, by letting us know that we should only take an overnight bag on the trip and not take suitcases (the organisers of our trip had not advised us of this fact). If Monique had not told us about this, it would have been a mad scramble for us to find overnight bags and pack them at the boat terminal, but instead we were able to organise our bags at the lodge. Monique offered to let us leave our suitcases at the Lodge for us until our return, even though we had checked out at that stage.
The staff had plenty of knowledge about the local area and were able to advise us and provide us with maps for activities and areas of interest to us. They were also tremendously polite and welcoming, and very considerate in regard to making modifications to the menu for dietary requirements and personal taste.
Dinner and breakfast were included in the tariff, as was the contents of the mini bar. The food was beautiful by the way, with local produce used where possible.
The rooms were big and beautifully appointed (we stayed in a Lodge room), built in the same, rough-hewn-timber style of the main lodge building. Our room had great views across to the lake, and I suspect that most of the other rooms did as well. The whole place had a wonderful ambience that made you want to relax in one of their big comfy chairs and just sit and look at the rural and lake views beyond and just chill out.
My only regret is that we didn't stay longer. We'll definitely be back, and for a longer stay next time.
I can't fault our stay here in ANY way.
Louise Harvey and Gary Kemp

Room Tip: I can recommend the Lodge rooms.

We stayed at Fiordland Lodge for 4 nights as we explored the Fiordland area and this is a true Luxury lodge in every sense of the word. The service and the room were 5 star. The staff was amazingly friendly and went out of their way to help us organize our days. It is an all-inclusive (read "pricey") approach with breakfast and dinner provided but we felt we got a good value for money because the food and service was of such outstanding quality and attention to details. For example, they provided us with a picnic lunch on the days that they knew we were going to be out hiking without us requesting it. The nightly drinks and canapés brought all the guests together. You could still keep to yourself if you wanted but it was very enjoyable to meet the other guests. The location was perfect and central for day trips to the Hollyford, Routebourne and Keplar Walking Tracks or a drive to Milford Sound. A special treat was the helicopter tour over Dusky and Doubtful Sounds with direct pick-up/drop-off at the Lodge. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend a stay here if your budget allows.

We had heard about great fly fishing in NZ, but we didn't know about the terrific Fiordland Lodge. It provides everything we'd wanted for a wonderful vacation. Fresh local foods that also comes from their garden, rooms have a unbelievable view of the lake and mountains, bathrooms have heated mirror so it doesn't fog. Need this at home! The staff is so profession. Then there is Ron, the fishing guide. He is a local and he will show where all the fish are. He makes sure you catch most of them. Come and enjoy like we did!

We stayed in the executive suite of the lodge, which was splendid. The accommodations consisted of a bedroom, large bath with heated floor, and living area with a fireplace. There was a wonderful view of Lake Te Anau. It was very relaxing and perfect for honeymooners. Only ten minutes from the town center, one felt completely away from all the hustle and bustle of a tourist town. The meals (breakfast and dinner are included) were scrumptious and were beautifully presented. The staff, led by Monique and Andy, saw to our every need. They will prepare picnics if you desire or serve you lunch at the lodge if you are staying put and taking it easy. If you want to get away from it all and see the beautiful nature of Fiordlands National Park, this is the place to stay.

Ditto to all the other 5 star comments! Just an example of the hospitality is that we brought a crayfish back to the lodge and they prepared it for us as an entre with a most beautiful presentation. We were also amazed they did laundry for us. all no extra charge! Our family of 5 all thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and looked forward to returning after our days of excursions. Special mention to the managers Andy and Monique. Also the rest of the staff are friendly and competent. You will not be disappointed if you chose to stay here!

It's been very interesting in our travels round NZ how few really good places there are to stay if you like a wilderness setting and a bit of style(without paying over a thousand quid a night!) This lodge absolutely defines what a perfect lodge should be. Amazing views over the lake and fiordland mountains, chunky hunting lodge design, open fires even on a sunny day, fabulous food, excellent service, and as much privacy as you like.
We stayed in one of the log cabins, which offers complete privacy, real peacefulness, all mod cons except for wifi ( which is only available in the main lodge building, but this wasn't really a problem for us), cosiness, comfy beds, and a real wilderness feel. In comparison, the rooms in the lodge itself were more more standard type hotel rooms ( albeit with an the superb view)
We loved the whole experience... If only all so called "lodges" we're like this!

Room Tip: If you like privacy, quietness and space, go for a log cabin

We stayed in a number of luxury lodges in NZ but this one was the best. The food is superb, the rooms are good, you can enjoy a drink and after dinner coffee with your fellow guests but you can eat alone. Sitting in the lounge watching the weatehr pass across the enormous picture windows looking on to the Lake was magic. The staff are friendly and the other guests were interesting. I highly recommend this lodge.
