Another of the NZ Great Walks. A must do tramp if you are in the area. Weather is a factor and the late summer/autumn is a more settled time. Can be combined with Greenstone and/or Caples tracks to make a round trip.

The Routeburn Track was the favourite walk in New Zealand of Sir Edmund Hilary. Given the number of world class tracks in NZ you can't get a better endorsement than that.

I've been lucky enough to walk the Routeburn twice now (10 years apart). Once in each direction. For those of you who care I would recommend doing the walk starting at the Divide rather than the Routeburn Shelter which is where most people do. This is because the walk from the Harris Shelter down to the Routeburn Falls Hut on the second day offer views that you wouldn't think were possible on this planet and to take them all in it makes more sense to be walking down hill.

For those of you in doubt about whether to walk this track just do it. Plan ahread, book the huts or campsites and go for it. You'll never regret it. Sure an element of luck is needed with the weather in order to get the best views but I guarantee you you'll get at least a few moments where you see a vista that you never thought were possible.

The only negative is that the Lake MacKenzie campsite is pretty poor and the toilet facilities in the campsites in general are awful. However, I challenge you to find a better place to camp in the world than the Routeburn Flats campsite when its sunny.

One final thing. When you consider jumping in to the river or lake just do it!

It's one of the shorter of the Great Walks - if you're hard core you could manage it in a mid summer day, or, like most, a more leisurely 2.5 days. Beautiful scenery, a range of scenery (moss strewn rainforest, open alpine traversing, rivervalley, waterfalls, you name it), good huts (as always, bring your ear plugs),flush toilets. Downside? Well it's always a game of complete luck with the weather at anytime of year.

We made only a part of the Routeburn, but was fantastic. The scenery is quite diverse, and is changing on each few hundreds meters altitude. If you have time make the entire track, if not at least partially. You can try and make the trip from The Divide to Lake Howden Hut. Its about 2.5 hours both ways.

I decided to walk the track on the last day of the year. I had not trained and only had moderate fitness so was probably slightly crazy. Walk took 8 hours which was very solid walking. I think the walk is ideally done over 3 days but if you are keen and weather ok it can easily be done in a day. Need to be really careful with nutrition and clothing as I struck sleet at top of pass.
You get a real great mix of scenery from bush to waterfalls to open mountain to rivers. It is just fantastic.
Hutts on the walk are great and of real high quality. Would recommend this as a must do even if you just do part of it. It is fantastic.
