We did this overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound in January 2013. An absolutely amazing experience. We had lots of rain but without it we would not have seen the wonderful waterfalls. An absolute trip of a lifetime not to be missed on a trip to New Zealand

I chose Doubtful Sound rather than Milford Sound after reading a review in Trailfinders magazine. Went at the very beginning of the season and spent overnight on Fiordland Navigator boat through Real Journeys. The scenery is totally breathtaking, following in the steps of Captain Cook and Captain Vancouver. Not another boat seen. Kayaked in the sound, met great people and very well looked after. sleeping on the boat in total silence was unbelievable. Don't waste anymore time just go there.

The overnight Cruise is a pure moment of magic ! You start with taking the boat on manapouri lake, then you go on a coach through à beautiful pass and then you reach your boat That takes you through the sound. The best moment is when the engine is cut and all you CAN Hear is silence. Much better than the milord sound !

Having gone on a one day cruise with Real Journeys on Doubtful Sound, my husband and I had always wanted to experience the overnight on the Doubtful Navigator. It was everything we could have wanted, and more. The Sounds are beautiful in any weather but we were lucky to have clear blue skies with snow on the mountains. The mountains and water are fabulously beautiful and the scenery changes around every bend. We went out on a tender in the afternoon and could have gone kayaking if we had wanted to. The buffet dinner was excellent as was the breakfast. Don't miss the slide show and talk after dinner. The ship's nature guide, Josh, presented the talk and he was informative and funny. Josh also gave commentary about the flora, fauna, sea and geology at various times during our journey.
If you go on the off season you can save some money. It is expensive but worth it, running an operation like this must cost a fortune. The staff were all friendly and it was obvious how hard they all worked to make our trip enjoyable.
On other Trip Advisor reviews, some people criticized the weather and the sandflies. It's a rainforest, so there might be rain which brings out the waterfalls, and sandflies are part of Fiordland. Make sure you have good clothing and a good repellent and you will be all set. Also, bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper as the generators can be noisy. Everyone on our trip said they had a good night's sleep but I woke up a few times. I think some rooms are more noisy than others so it might pay to enquire about that.

I wanted to see the sounds and thought Milford too crowded,. Friends recommended Doubtful based on a wilderness trip they took (hike, camp, kayak). By the time I arrived in the area, too late in season for a similar trip. Ended up taking an overnight boat trip. The views are amazing. The water so black. I spent so much time on deck just taking it all in. The Sounds have this unique beauty, even with so much beautiful nature in new Zealand. If you have the time, skip the Milford hour cruise, and spend time here. Not only less crowded, much prettier.
