Do this walk the REVERSE of what is recommended and do it in 3 days not 4/5 unless you love SANDFLIES. Route is Moturau Hut ( bypass ) and overnight Iris Burn. Sandflies along the path OK WHY ? because their all at the huts, demons from hell all partying en masse as each day more trampers turn up so they can feast all day and night. The walking is not tough, flattish, beautiful forest and you can make fast time. Not much really to see. The next day you do the "crème de la crème" of the walk along the ridge back to Te Anau and Luxmore Hut. A fantastic days walking on a sunny not to windy day. The views are varied and stunning. The final section to Luxmore can be stupendous. The Luxmore Hut is virtually Sandfly free. The final day a routine walk out. The recommended way is HARD on the first day as the climb to Luxmore is taxing. Then you have a great day on the tops to then spend overnight in the Sandfly Hilton which also Motorau hut is too. No thanks ! This way its better every day.

I did this in mid January 2014 - starting at the control gates , finishing at Rainbow reach.

( tip : leave your car at the finish ..and get a local shuttle to the start, your car will then be waiting for you regardless what time u finish, no need to hit a particular time for a transfer bus back to the start)

Overall - the track is well kept as it is a Great Walk, Superb views from the alpine section on Day 2 - some of the best I have had in NZ ( having also done the Routeburn, Rees-Dart, Wilkin-Young, Travers-Sabine)

the tramp can easily be done in 3 days - however as it is a Great Walk - huts must be booked in advance .. and the prices have gone up to around $55 per night per person!

I would recommend this trip - would rate the scenery as a little better than the Routeburn, and also a bit more strenuous ( took only 2 days for the Routeburn) than Routeburn or Rees-Dart. It is a bit less strenuous than the gillespie pass day of the Wilkin Young circuit .. which has a rougher track) and rather less than the Travers-Sabine.

Me and a friend decided to do a day hike walking for approximately 7 hours to rainbow reach passing a wildlife centre seeing native NZ birds, which until now I hadn't seen properly! The gaps in the trees showed fantastic views of the Fiordland national park. It was a nice, easy trail and I wish I could have spent a few more days trekking. There are plenty of toilets and drinking water fountains at the huts along the trail.

We spent 3 nights in all the Huts on this track. This was are first time doing the Kelper and found it easy/hard going but well worth it for the views.

Nestled between Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri in the Fiordland National Park, the circular Kepler Track offers a great tramping experience on well-graded and developed tracks.

The side trip to Luxmore Cave to explore the stalactites and stalagmites underground is worth it.

The track runs along a narrow alpine ridge at 1400 m altitude and the views are pretty spectacular along with some weather conditions as the wind can reach up to 140mph up there, so most important do your homework and have the right gear.

You can drop your packs and detour to the summit at 1472m for 360-degree views or not drop your pack as recommended as the Kea are equally determined to eat your lunch and not so keen to put everything back into your backpack after.

We were told that the weather was just prefect and most unusual as very calm day, making the summit special.

One day I will return to do this spectacular walk again.

I'd definitely recommend the Kepler Track for anyone wanting a challenging but do-able multi-day hike on a well-maintained track that explores some of NZ's alpine landscapes. It would be impossible to get lost on this track. It's easy to access from Te Anau and the huts make it easy for you by supplying drinkable water, gas cookers and bunks with mattresses. Each hut has a live-in ranger and they were a big highlight - lots of personality as well as knowledge of the area and the local flora and fauna. As usual, you'll enjoy it more if your pack is as light as possible and you've got plenty of wind-proof and wet weather gear. Lots of up and downhill - walking poles would probably be a good idea.
