“First part is a good day-walk.”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

We did the trek to Luxmore Hut and back to Te Anau as a day-walk.
The track is very good - almost a road for this portion.
It is easy to get the water taxi across to Brod Bay (and back if you want) to cut out the walk around the lake so it is not too long for a day trip.
It is quite a steep ascent - but a well cut zig-zag path that decreases the slope. Sheltered in the trees for most of the way, you emerge into the elements above the tree line before reaching Luxmore Hut - a good spot for lunch.
TIP: If you go, take a head torch so you can explore Luxmore Cave just near the hut.
Great views from up the top.

“Fantastic alpine hike”
Reviewed January 31, 2013

We had an excellent time on the Kepler - it is a fantastic trek. We stayed in the DOC huts and did it 2 nights (staying at Luxmore and Iris Burn) - both in superb condition with fun and informative rangers. We parked next to the DOC without any problems though could probably have parked closer to the Control Gates and saved a few unnecessary km's.

“Fantastic and well worth the effort”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

Just completed the Kepler track and had the most amazing weather which made the experience extra special due to the usual amount of expected rain in the Fiordlands of NZ.
I am reasonably fit but not a very big person so found carrying a 20kg pack up the first climb quite challenging, please make sure you only take what you really need as this is a tough climb of about 4-5 hours. The hardest however for me was the downhill section to the Iris Burn hut from mount Luxmore which resulted in very sore legs the next day (I was not alone), be careful if you have bad knees and take it slowly. In hind sight I would suggest the walk the other way round (2 night stay from rainbow reach). This would give you a long flat warm up day and a lighter pack for the up hill and most importantly a light pack for the last day downhill to save the knees and legs. I have also walked the Routeburn and found the Kepler harder.
Here are some important things you may find useful:
Very strong insect repellent (turbo sized mozzies and sandflys everywhere)
Freeze dried meals will give the correct balance of carbs and protein for energy recovery and are very easy to prepare.
German black bread is great for lunch with sliced cheese and salami.
Ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.
Something to do at the huts as it can get boring.
Togs for a swim in the lake (cold but very refreshing)
Tape for blisters (do it before they get bad and even before you start particularly the heels as the climb will cause pressure into the back of your boots/shoes)
Do some training such as wall sits, squats, lunges to improve leg strength. Even find some steps and go up and down with a heavy pack on.
Be prepared for bad weather I was surprised how many people were walking in jeans. The weather can change in minutes, invest or hire some good quality wet weather clothing.

Have a great time, its well worth the effort and I bet you will want to more as its quite addictive

“And another thing”
Reviewed January 25, 2013 via mobile

I agree with the high praise of the other reviews. Just want to add that the hut talks given each night by the ranger staying at each hut ranged from informative to entertaining. Helpful information like how walking experience varies across the range of wind speeds. We thought 80 km winds was difficult but then we learnt they don't close the track unless they predict 150km winds.

“Great experience”

One of the very best NZ Tramps, a must do for anyone wanting a great NZ experience. As with all tramping weather is a factor, the most settled time is late summer/autumn.
