“Wonderful Milford Sound”

This is one of the must see places if you visit South Island. Weather will be a factor as this area gets lot of rain. One day tours from Queenstown are available.

“A boat trip - why it's worth doing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2006

Literally just got back from a Red Boat trip around Milford Sound. We were based in Te Anau (2.5hrs away) and drove there in our hire car. We'd booked the boat trip at our hotel reception and it cost AUS$79 each. That's not cheap, but after the 2.5hr boat trip and visit to the observatory we really thought it was worth the money.

Whether you want to make the journey to Milford Sound or not will depend on the weather. We had a near perfect day with clear skies and lots of sunhine. I have been told that when it rains the views are nowhere as impressive. So check the weather forecast days in advance to try and get a plum day for a visit.

What lots of flyers and websites failed to tell us was what there was to see there. New Zealand's south island is chock full of beautiful scenery, so what's so special about this place? Well, it's the combination of the breathtaking snow covered mountain peaks, the many spectacular waterfalls, the huge walls of rock threaded with copper, iron ore and quartz... you get the idea.

There is also a chance to see seals, dolphins and sea birds too. If your ticket price includes entry to the observatory, then you'll also get 1/2 hour on a floating building where you can descend 8 metres to a observation room where you look out at marine life that you can normally only see in much deeper waters. There's a scientific reason to do with fresh water on top of salt water that means deep sea marine life comes so close to the surface.

We were in two minds as to whether we wanted to make the trip from Queenstown to Te Anau to Milford Sound when we could have headed somewhere else or spent the money on another 'activity'. My advice would be: don't miss this place if you're into NZ for the scenery. It tops anything else you'll have seen on the south island.

The Cruise was a bit cold, but the views made up for it. Milford sound is a bit out of the way for most travelers, but if you love looking at all that New Zealand has to offer, consider the trip. The boat itself wasn't anything great, but the amount of waterfalls and wildlife were worth it. Dolphins, seals, and awesome views!

“Unique fjord scenery - but requires lots of time”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2005

Beautiful scenery - we used "Real Journeys" package and took the best value for time option i.e. we flew out and back in their 9 passenger (sized for small people) islander aircraft. It took 35 to 40 minutes each way -other alternative is a 5 hour coach ride each way (definitely not for time conciious travelers). Scenery is beautiful and from the air is really impressive. I'm not a big fan of pilots threading their way through snow capped mountains but managed both flights quite nicely. If you're squeamish about such flights, skip this attraction. Boat ride around the Sound took 90 minutes -as with most boat rides - 30 minutes was enough. Food on board not too bad if you're anticipating tourist buffets.
In the Sound, you see waterfalls, dolphns, seals, and sheer walls on both sides - pretty impressive scenery.

“The most gorgeous drive you will ever take!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2004

The drive to Milford sound from Te Anau is without a doubt one of the most scenic drives I have ever been on. I don't even know where to begin. Glaciers, glacier springs, gorgeous waterfalls, mountains etc. Wow!! We took a Milford Sound cruise with Red Boat cruises. It was amazing as well and well worth the two hour trip to get there!!!!! You will see seals, penguins, dolphins, and again amazing mountains, waterfalls. Did I mention, AMAZING?
