“Spectacular on a Clear Day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2014

We stayed in Queenstown for almost a week and spent a day on the Milford Sound.

We stayed in Queenstown and watched the weather reports carefully to choose a day that was clear and sunny (there are very few such days unfortunately - perhaps 30 per year?).

We chose to drive to the park from Queenstown which gave us the option of stopping where we wanted to on the way (the drive to the Milford Sound is almost as spectacular as the Sound itself). The trip is about 290 km each direction and takes just over 4 hours each way (google maps says 3 hours 30 but there can be delays along the way and stops for photos).

Other options include bus-ship packages leaving from major hotels in Queenstown.

The Sound is spectacular and is as good as an Alaska Cruise without the glaciers. Myriads of waterfalls along the shore and beautiful mountains provide a scenic backdrop to the Sound itself..

We purchased a boat cruise on-line called the nature cruise that was about 2 1/2 hours long and it was very good. The ship was smaller than most and thus was able to almost touch the shore. Because of this the cruise included sailing up to and under a waterfall - soaking all on the fore-deck (who were suitably attired in rain gear). - much like Niagara Falls "Maid of the Mist". It was also able to get within a stones-throw of seals sunning on the rocks.

If you visit Queenstown and the weather is half-way reasonable it would be unfortunate to miss a visit to the Milford Sound.

“Awesome, scenic drive!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2014

Bring your raincoat and make the trip from Te Anau to Milford Sound. It is a scenic drive with water falls and beautiful scenery. As it is not a straight road, many twists and turns along your route. Pop's View is worth a stop, beautiful vista's and a place to take some photo's of the misty landscape and it is so quiet!! After going through Homer Tunnel you are almost at the end of the road --- Milford Sound. It was raining quite heavily and still we spent time outside, wandered around before going into the little restaurant for a bite to eat and warm beverage.
The area gets about 8000M of rain each but don't let that be a deterrent to seeing this beautiful area of South New Zealand.

This was a well worth trip. It was raining heavily and the drive was beautiful with hundreds of waterfalls becoming active. Must be the most beautiful part of scenic South Island.

“Beautiful fjord”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2014

Loved the misty, almost eery landscape surrounded by cascading waterfalls on all sides. Boat trip is now expensive but if you do the Milford Track you can get the ferry from Sandfly Point to the Milford Sound dock and get a really good sense of the Fjord. Maybe it's possible to ride over and back with the ferry at much less cost.

“Awe inspiring”

We went on a Juicy cruise out into the sound it was a good trip with just the right amount information given by the captain. I get fed up of guides who like the sound of their own voices. The views said it all it is a very atmospheric place with amazing photo opportunities. I think Juicy were the cheapest of boats there but I would use them again.
