Reviewed March 4, 2008

This hotel certainly shows its age, as do the beds.
no problems with staff, we didn't use the restaurant, so can't comment on catering .
Overall, nothing special.

Booked this hotel 5 months in advance requested double bed and a single, arrived after 5 hours drive from dunedin to find a very old run down hotel. Was given key to the room only to find 3 narrow single beds, layed on one to give benefit of doubt only to find 3 swaybacks. Staff not particularly helpful so we booked out only to be charged $50. Would not stay again.

We disagreed about this hotel's decor with one another. I thought it was a bit dated; Paul thought otherwise. It was comfortable, relatively quiet given the baby next door, and the staff were very helpful and attentive at reception. Two small criticisms:

1. The Restaurant Manager prowled throughout meals, fiddling with food and fussing around - hands off and let the staff get on!
2. Our room overlooked the lake but over the back of the kitchen with an enormous, dirty filled skip outside the back door. Not very picturesque.

Comfortable, adequate, reasonable value for money. Te Anau is not a big place so the walk to and from the centre was about 10 minutes - and pleasant on the way to and from evening meals.

We stayed here for 2 nights, but only really as a stopping point for getting to Milford Sound.

The hotel is part of a chain and seems to be undergoing a renovation. Our bedroom was a bit dated, but the bathroom had been recently updated and was very nice.

This hotel is just about as far from the main street as possible, but that's still only a 10-15 minute walk, although this seemed quite far walking back after dinner in a cold wind off the lake.

We booked the hotel after reading tripadvisor reviews based on the mixed reviews, that it was part of a big chain in the county and the few options bookables online but I have to agree with the bad reviews and encourage travelers to make an extra effort to book offline in some of the small places with better reviews (the lake side is full of then).

The hotel is old and basic, we were not expecting a luxury hotel but at least something a bit nicer. Apart from the general look and feeling, the main problem was that the room was ice cold when we arrived arround 7pm, an although we swiched it on inmediatly the heating system did not work very well so we literally freezed over night. We took the extra blanket but it was full of long black hairs, really disgusting!

The bathroon had been renovated so it looked ok but it was so cold and water temperature control so hard that my husband could not even take a shower in the morning and I almost freezed in the process.

The restaurant was closed so we had to go out to find a place open for dinner and could only have breakfast in our room (it was ok).

The only good point is the location close to the lake and on the road to Milford sound (I do will recomend to stay in Te Anau the night before if you are going there) but there are plenty of places close by so look for another place.

The hotel is in a great location but is in need of an upgrade. The beds were a bit saggy and the whole place had a tired look. The staff however were friendly and fun There's not much to do in Te Anau as it is a stepping stone to other activites so the hotel was good enough for the one night that we stayed

We stayed here for 2 nights, the room was clean, and spacious. We didn't eat in the restaurant because we like a restaurant in the city more.We didn't have to complain about a thing.Just a normal 3 star hotel nothing more and nothing less. One thing though it is quit near the city centre, and a good overnight stay for taking the milford souns cruise route!

  • Liked — clean, good views, close to towncentre, easy acces to milford sound
  • Disliked — our room was next to a gas instalation( scary idea)( but no noise)
